Welcome to the Department of Art at Chapman University. Our goal is to educate students about the images and objects that influence their perceptions of contemporary life and to prepare them to participate in shaping the world. Whatever your major, your ability to understand visual images is essential to your education; the Art Department is the focal point for this discussion on campus.
Curriculum The curriculum of the Art Department prepares students for graduate studies in art history and studio art and to work professionally as graphic designers. Our curriculum builds on the foundation of the university’s liberal arts curriculum, which teaches students to draw on diverse disciplines and approach things from a variety of perspectives--skills that are essential for developing strong critical thinking and an independent voice.
Faculty The Department of Art prides itself on the close relationships that students build with the faculty, creating an environment in which students can develop the creative, analytical, and technical skills necessary for their chosen careers. In addition to being dedicated teachers, all of the faculty are active artists, designers and scholars, allowing them to bring their professional experience directly into the classroom.
Location Southern California is home to the second largest population of artists and designers in the country and is distinguished by world-class museums such as the J. Paul Getty Museum and Research Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Huntington Library, and the Norton Simon Museum. The greater Los Angeles area is one of the most important and dynamic centers for the viewing, research, and production of art in the United States. Access to these resources allows students to experience first hand what they are studying in the classroom. Our strategic location enables the Department of Art to invite artists, scholars and design professionals from the region to share their varied experiences with students as visiting speakers or adjunct instructors.
