+-Asia for Educators, Columbia University

The Asia for Educators site contains reading lists, lesson plans, and multimedia units with primary-source images, timelines, maps, and illustrations. Many of the instructional materials are based upon contributions from Asia scholars at Columbia and other universities. The major focus is upon East Asia and materials are appropriate for teaching at the high school level. An important project is the web site Asia in the Curriculum which, with its bulletin-board format, allows educators and resources providers alike to share information on curriculum, pedagogy, and new resources such as virtual museum exhibitions.

+-Asian/Pacific Studies Institute, Duke University

APSI, started in 1981, is the largest center for research and teaching on East Asia in the Southeast. In addition to the academic initiatives sponsored for the university, APSI helps develop curricular activities for the larger community of schools and provides resources for the study of East Asia. It also conducts programs and workshops on environmentalism, gender and rural development in transitional economies, globalization, transnationalism, mass culture and technology, population and demographic studies, security studies and social movements.

+-East Asian Studies Center, Indiana University

Established in 1979, the East Asian Studies Center (EASC) designs both language pedagogy and culture workshops for East Asian collegiate specialists, K-12 educators and students. EASC’s resources are available to individuals from education, business and the community, both nationally and internationally. Seminars, conferences and cultural activities are generally open to the public, including K-12 teachers and students. EASC maintains a web site to disseminate East Asian resources.

+-Center for East Asian Studies, University of Kansas

Educational Outreach is a key component of the center’s agenda. Faculty and associates bring their expertise on China, Korea and Japan to K-12 schools, colleges, government agencies, business and community groups in Kansas and Missouri. A special effort is made to introduce East Asian content into K-12 curriculum. Special program features are a Speaker’s Bureau, recommended web sites for K-12 educators, and video resources available through the center. The Kansas Committee for International Education in the Schools is operated out of CEAS and facilitates programs on a state-wide basis that increase awareness of the critical importance of international education. This program engages classroom teachers in an active dialogue about the internationalization of the schools, and provides focus to collaborations between university outreach programs and K-12 educators.

+-Asian Studies Center, University of Pittsburgh

The Asian Studies Center is a regional center for the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, funded by the Freeman Foundation. Education outreach activities have been increased considerably and now cover K-12 in a comprehensive manner, with more emphasis upon the primary level of schooling to balance the work for middle and high school students and teachers.

+-Center for East Asian Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Center for East Asian Studies and environmental scientists at UW-Madison are working in collaboration with local middle and high school teacher to develop an innovative program incorporating Chinese language and the sciences. Local teachers and students will be linked with counterparts in China, culminating in environmental research study tours to sites in China. This project will enhance language skills; facilitate environmental awareness; and encourage student-directed, hands-on approaches to scientific field work. Partners in this project include the International Crane Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and the Field Museum in Chicago. The Rotary Club has demonstrated an interest in the project, also. Long-lasting effects are expected to accrue, including such things as the development of life-long cross-cultural friendships, the creation of a broader perspective and appreciation of the world, and the encouragement of students to pursue university-level international studies.

+-China Institute

Founded in 1926, China Institute in America, located in New York City, promotes the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of traditional and contemporary Chinese culture and heritage and provides the historical context for understanding modern-day China. Teach China is the professional development program of the Institute that assists educators in learning and teaching about China. Teaching resources include videos, slides, artifacts, books and curriculum materials, and gallery tours with educational workshops for students. K-12 educators interested in China are invited to take advantage of professional development programs, including courses, study tours, curriculum development, and institutional membership.

This resource has instructional weblinks about the cultural, economic, environmental, geographic and political systems of East Asia.

+-Center for Japanese Studies, University of Michigan

The Center for Japanese Studies provides K-12 resources containing information relevant to teachers who wish to include Japanese content in their curriculum. It includes information on the Center’s JapanKit, the Teachers’ Institute in Asian Studies Conference, the Japanese School of Detroit, and other links to K-12 related web sites with information on Japan.

+-Japan Society

The Japan Society is an excellent source for researching and understanding Japanese art. Its education programs provide broad historical and cultural context for teachers and students. Its K-12 Journey through Japan program offers an online interactive timeline and atlas, with photographs and digital copies of art masterpieces. The site also includes downloadable lesson plans, bibliographies, and other classroom resources. In addition to the Gallery, the Society has a lending library for teachers which contains teaching units, books, videos, CD-ROM, annotated bibliographies of literature, and numerous handouts.

+-Korea Society

The Korea Society is a non-profit organization in the US dedicated to the promotion of greater understanding and cooperation between the people of the United States and Korea. Study tours, fellowships, conferences, and the development of curriculum materials are supported by the Society.

+-Program for Teaching East Asia, University of Colorado

The Program for Teaching East Asia (TEA) conducts national, regional, and state projects designed to enhance and expand teaching and learning about East Asia at the elementary and secondary school levels. Specific undertakings focus on professional development for teachers, curriculum development, and curriculum consultation and reform related to East Asia in K-12 education. TEA is sponsored by the University of Colorado Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and is associated with the university’s Center for Asian Studies. The Program for Teaching East Asia is funded by the Freeman Foundation.
