The Department of Dance at Chapman University has positioned itself as one of the top dance departments in the country and as one of the great success stories at Chapman. They have built its national reputation on joining theory and practice, on producing practice-ready graduates able to perform in a variety of styles and genres, who leave the department after gaining considerable experience as choreographers, as well as dancers. As the Dance Department continued its upward trajectory, it became apparent they needed a facility that matched the quality of work being produced from our students and faculty.

In Fall 2021, Chapman will open a state-of-the-art dance facility with bigger classrooms, rehearsal studios, a performance studio, a health clinic and all the other facilities a top dance program needs and deserves.

The one obstacle to the activities of the department over the years has been the size and set-up of their current facilities. They were adequate for the 50 majors of 2002 but are now straining to accommodate the 135 majors today. There are four dance studios, although only two of the four have the minimum dimensions (2,400 square feet) recommended by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD) and two are considerably smaller (1,824 and 870 square feet respectively). There is only one medium-size classroom, no dedicated treatment room, and no space where the students can congregate between classes.

The new Department of Dance facility in the historic Villa Park Orchards packing plant is being designed to provide a superior educational experience for our students to allow the program to continue to thrive and grow on a national level, while making a stunning architectural statement.  Five new studios will be located on the upper floor of the plant, all larger than the NASD requirement and the largest studio will be set up to easily convert to a performance venue for small concerts and masterclasses. The lower floor of the building will include two classrooms, a faculty dance studio and a smaller studio, as well as a dedicated health clinic, so that dancers who get injured can be evaluated and treated appropriately in the best possible environment.
