Math Placement

» Math Placement

At Chapman, all students must meet the Introductory Mathematics Requirement. To do this, you must either take or waive one of the following two math classes:

  • MATH 100: Learning and Studying Mathematics for Understanding I (algebra). This class and its lab, MATH 100L, are required for all undergraduate students not in a STEM program.
  • MATH 101: Learning and Studying Mathematics for Understanding II (calculus readiness). This class and its lab, MATH 101L, are required for undergraduate students in a STEM program.

Your area of study, specifically whether you are majoring in a STEM (science, technology engineering, math) program, determines which of these classes you must take or waive.

If you are not a STEM major...

If you are not a STEM major, you must take or waive MATH 100 (algebra) and MATH 100L to fulfill the Introductory Mathematics Requirement. You can find out all you need to know about MATH 100 and 100L on our MATH 100 page:

If you are a STEM major...

If you are a STEM major, you must take or waive MATH 101 (calculus readiness) and MATH 101L to fulfill the Introductory Mathematics Requirement because it is a prerequisite for many of the classes you will have to take in your major.

You can find out all you need to know about MATH 101 and 101L on our MATH 101 page:

Tip

MATH 100/L and 101/L do not fulfill the GE Quantitative Inquiry requirement for graduation. They only satisfy the Introductory Mathematics Requirement.
