The Award of Excellence has been given by Chapman University since 1982 to an individual or organization that exemplifies Schweitzer’s ethics of reverence for life and his dedication to a life of service.

2018 Schweitzer Award of Excellence Winner is Larry and Dulcie Kugelman

Larry and Dulcie KuggelmanDulcie Kugelman received her BA in Peace Studies at Chapman University in 1996.  Larry Kugelman had majored in Philosophy and English Literature and served in the Peace Corps, teaching English in Iran, before embarking on a long and distinguished career in healthcare.  Upon his retirement, Larry and Dulcie traveled to Northern Ireland where both pursued  Master of Arts degrees in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Ulster.  There they helped develop and support innovative grassroots peacebuilding projects such as:

  • Seeds of Hope fostering reconciliation between former combatants and their victims
  • Picturing Peace teaching elementary and middle school Protestant and Catholic children to communicate their feelings, values and understandings of peace through photography
  • Cirque de OC bringing children affected by the Northern Ireland violence to stay with host families in Orange County and learn esteem building techniques through performance art.
