Howard, PhD is an Associate Professor of Math Pedagogy in the Schmid College of Science and Technology, where she brings over two decades of experience advancing equity in STEM education. Her research employs critical quantitative and mixed methodological approaches to examine learning experiences in mathematics and computer science, with particular attention to family involvement and community engagement. Through her research, she works to ensure educational research serves historically marginalized communities while challenging traditional metrics that may overlook cultural strengths and resources.<br/>
<p>Dr. Howard's work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and Google Foundation, and she was also a fellow in the 2021 cohort for the National Science Foundation Institute in Critical Quantitative, Computational, and Mixed-Methodologies (ICQCM). Her concerns for certain inequities have led to numerous publications in journals, such as the Urban Education, Journal of Future Studies, Educational Policy, and e-Learning and Digital Media. She has also co-authored books, such as Coding+Math: Strengthen K-5 Math Skills with Computer Science, and she is co-founder and co-editor for the Journal of Computer Science Integration.</p>
<p>Prior to her current role, Dr. Howard served in various educational leadership positions that inform her current work. As a former K-12 teacher in diverse school districts including Santa Ana Unified, Compton Unified, and LAUSD, she gained firsthand experience with the challenges and opportunities in creating equitable learning environments. Most recently, she served as Dean of the School of Education at the University of Redlands, where she advanced initiatives supporting justice and belonging in education. This combination of practitioner, administrative, and research experience gives her a unique perspective on transforming educational systems to better serve all learners.<br/><br/><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicolhoward">Dr. Howard on LinkedIn</a><br/><br/><a href="https://x.com/nicolrhoward">Dr. Howard on X</a></p></scholarly-works-overwrite><cv/><media-contact>pr@chapman.edu</media-contact><lecture-requests>nhoward@chapman.edu</lecture-requests><phone/><website>https://www.nicolhoward.com/ </website></item>
