Maximizing Your Experience
- Join language clubs, student groups, and other special interest clubs.
- Take a class about the local culture and history.
- Take advantage of excursions provided by your overseas university to explore and learn more about the country.
- Acknowledge big and small differences between your host culture and back home, such as interpersonal communication, eating habits, transportation, and other customs.
- Research travel guides for information about free/discounted activities, street fairs, concerts, art exhibits, restaurants, and other local events.
- Use the local language of your host country.
- If English is the primary language, learn the slang they use.
Keeping in Touch
- Use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Zoom for free internet calls over Wi-Fi.
- Check with your cell phone provider to discuss temporary international plans OR research how to purchase a separate phone or SIM card abroad.
- Send postcards and letters to your friends and family.
- Review how to vote while abroad.
- Blog about your experiences with WordPress, Blogger, or LinkedIn.
- Keep a journal to remember your experience and reflect when you return home.
- Limit screen time to maximize your opportunities to immerse yourself in the community.

Preparing to Return Home
- Retain all of your coursework and syllabi until your grades have been posted.
- Ensure you are registered for Chapman courses the following semester.
- Arrange your housing for next semester.
- Think about how you have changed, what lessons and skills you want to retain back home, and your personal or professional goals.
- Say your goodbyes and take lots of pictures!
- Give yourself time to readjust when you return home and visit with those you missed.
