BFA in Screenwriting

» Screenwriting

Take your stories from idea to script to screen with a BFA in Screenwriting from Chapman University.

Whether you’re fixing up your script solo or hard at work in the writers’ room, you will explore character development and story structure while writing for a variety of formats, including shorts, features and episodic television.

By the time you earn your degree, you won’t just have a pair of feature-length scripts under your belt. You’ll have the connections you need to break into the industry and write stories that captivate audiences all over the world.

Screenwriting is about...

Crafting Characters

Three-dimensional characters are the cornerstone of any story. Learn how to come up with them, write them and do them justice.

Structuring Stories

Mastering narrative structure and pacing is fundamental to the screenwriting craft. At Chapman, you’ll learn how to compose stories that hit the all the right notes at all the right moments.

Sharing Your Creativity

Translating your experiences and values into stories and sharing them isn’t just fun — it can make people laugh, cry and think about important topics that they’ve never thought about before.

Finding Your Voice

Screenplays need distinctive voices. The best screenwriters make it look easy, but finding yours can take practice. At Chapman, you’ll write every day on your own and in teams to hone your storytelling voice.

Getting Started as a Screenwriter
Breaking into the TV industry can be a daunting task, but with enough perseverance and the connections you make in college, you can make it through. Here’s how some of our alumni did exactly that.

Internships

Chapman is located in Southern California, which means we are right at the heart of the film and television industries and are a great place to get your foot in the door with an internship. Our students have interned with organizations like DreamWorks, Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon, Lionsgate, Blumhouse Productions and more.

Study Abroad

Take your passion for storytelling worldwide in one of our many study abroad programs. We’ll work closely with you to find one that aligns with your schedule and goals.

Clubs and Organizations

Pop quiz: as an aspiring writer, what’s the best way to continuously improve your writing chops? Answer: getting feedback and support from other aspiring writers, including your peers.

At Chapman, you’ll be able to do just that. We’re home to a community of up-and-coming screenwriters, and you’ll be able to join in with student-run organizations like:

  • Primetime Television Club: Craft your own characters and worlds, work with student directors and actors and get your work published online.
  • Short Club: Flex your creative muscles by creating a short film every month and screening it on campus/online.
  • Delta Kappa Alpha: Connect with passionate future filmmakers in this chapter of the national, cinema-focused professional fraternity. (And don’t let the “fraternity moniker fool you: DKA is open to everyone regardless of gender.)

Other Perks

  • Work on actual film sets and learn the entire production process alongside student producers, directors and actors.
  • Join a community of passionate visual storytellers.
  • See your scripts adapted for the screen and shown on campus and in the larger community.
  • Get career guidance for life (yes, really: for life) at our Career Center.
