Accelerated Undergrad-M.A. in Film Studies

» Earn your M.A. in Film Studies in just five years

Dodge College offers a Film Studies “4 +1” Accelerated Program that enables undergraduate students to get a head start on their MA in Film Studies by enrolling in graduate courses. Students enrolled in the 4+1 program graduate with their MA in Film Studies in five years as opposed to six years.

Eligibility Requirements for Program:

Academic Standing to be eligible:

  • Must be a film studies major or:
  • Must be a student in the film division of Dodge College and have taken two upper division film studies classes or:
  • A student not in these two categories must be in good standing to complete a film studies minor by the end of the fall of their senior year.

Other Requirements to be eligible:

  • Must apply spring of your junior year
  • Must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA
  • Must complete application materials by December 15th

*Second round students who are selected will also need to do interview with Dr. Carman, Dr. Lee or Dr. Fuery before a final decision is made.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify different theoretical approaches to film studies and apply them to analyze film(s).
  • Compare different filmmaking traditions of national/regional cinemas in a global context.
  • Apply primary research skills at archives and libraries for a historical analysis paper.
  • Construct a thesis project that engages with major research/analytical tools of the discipline.

Degree Requirements

Requirements for the Accelerated Five–Year Undergraduate/Master of Arts in Film Studies degree

  1. Complete 12 credits at the 500 or 600 level during the undergraduate senior year. Complete remaining 24 credits the following year.
  2. Successfully complete the thesis project.
  3. Pass an oral defense of the thesis project.

In order to apply to the Film Studies 4+1 accelerated graduate program, you must submit the required application materials, as well as a Creative Supplement.

*Must be from current Chapman faculty but cannot be Dr. Carman, Dr. Lee or Dr. Fuery

No additional information should be sent to Dodge College or the Office of Admissions outside of what is required on the application. Any outside work sent to either office will not be reviewed as part of the admission process.
