» Bachelor of Music Education - Instrumental/Vocal | Application Process

Emphasize in vocal music or instrumental music. Gain hands–on experience in elementary and secondary music programs while obtaining a wide repertoire of skills and confidence to become a teacher.

This will take you through the application process for an undergraduate Music Education (pre-certification) - Instrumental/Vocal degree and make sure you know how it works from start to finish.  Be sure to visit all four (4) sections below for pertinent application and audition information.

+ - Deadlines

First Year students can apply Early Decision (binding) or Early Action (non-binding) by Nov. 1, or Regular Decision by Jan. 15. Transfer students can apply Regular Decision by Feb. 15. A final admission decision will not be made until all appropriate materials have been submitted and reviewed by the admission and music committees.

NOTE: Students who consider Chapman University their first-choice school should apply Early Decision.

Late applications are reviewed on a space available basis only. Please refer to the application checklist for more information on specified Admission deadline(s).

Common Application and Creative Supplement Deadlines:

  • FIRST YEAR Early Decision (binding): Wednesday, November 1, 2017
  • FIRST YEAR Early Action (non-binding): Wednesday, November 1, 2017
  • FIRST YEAR Regular Decision: Monday, January 15, 2018
  • TRANSFER Regular Decision: Thursday, February 15, 2018

+ - Creative Supplement and In-Person Audition Requirements

The following items must be submitted through the Creative Supplement to be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Music in Education (pre-certification) – Instrumental/Vocal program.

For Students who intend to audition In-Person:

  • Audition on primary instrument: Prospective students must schedule an audition appointment on their primary instrument (guitar, percussion, piano, strings, voice or woodwinds & brass) during the posted audition dates. BM in Music Education applicants should refer to the audition requirements prescribed for your primary instrument.
  • Research paper or Scholarly Essay: Please submit a Research Paper or Scholarly Essay from a previous institution (high school or college)
  • Goal Statement:  Describe your long-term personal and professional goals and discuss how the degree program and area of study you wish to pursue at Chapman will help you meet those goals.
  • Letter of Recommendation: The letter should come from your most recent music instructor or a professional with whom you have worked. Once your Creative Supplement is submitted, you will be prompted to your applicant status page where you can invite your recommender to submit a letter of recommendation. Your recommender will receive an email prompting him or her to submit their recommendation on your behalf. Please keep in mind this letter of recommendation is specific to the Conservatory of Music.  This is a separate recommendation from those required by the Office of Admission.
  • Interview: In addition to the above requirements, you may be asked for a personal interview (in-person or via phone) with the appropriate Area Director.  You will be contacted if an interview is required for admission.

+ - Creative Supplement and Audition via Upload Requirements

For students who intend to audition via upload:

  • Audition on primary instrument: BM in Music Education applicants who choose to submit an uploaded audition video should refer to the audition requirements for their primary instrument (guitar, percussion, piano, strings, voice or woodwinds & brass).
    • NOTE: Uploaded videos should include an introduction and a brief discussion of your performing experience. Please be sure to address why you want to attend Chapman University.
    • Before beginning your performance, please speak the title of your piece and the name of the composer.
  • Research paper or Scholarly Essay: Please submit a Research Paper or Scholarly Essay from a previous institution (high school or college)
  • Goal Statement: Describe your long-term personal and professional goals and discuss how the degree program and area of study you wish to pursue at Chapman will help you meet those goals.

+ - Schedule an Audition / Dates & Requirements

Once your Creative Supplement is submitted, you will be prompted to your applicant status page where you can register for your in-person audition. Early Decision and Early Action applicants should register for the November audition dates; Regular Decision applicants should register for the Jan, Feb or March audition dates. Please note audition dates will vary based on your instrument.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Please refer to the links below for a detailed listing of audition requirements, sorted by primary instrument. In-Person applicants must schedule an audition appointment on their primary instrument (guitar, keyboard collaborative arts, percussion, piano/organ, strings, vocal or woodwinds & brass) during the posted audition dates. Audition Upload applicants should also refer to the audition requirements for their primary instrument when preparing their video submission.
