» Bachelor of Music in Composition | Application Process

Obtaining your BM in Composition, Concert Music or Electroacoustic Music allows students to participate in musical performance as a composer and have your works read, performed, or even recorded. Study modern techniques of music making within an academic model.

Below you'll find the application process for an undergraduate BM in Composition degree (both emphases). Be sure to visit all the sections below for pertinent application and audition information.

+ - Deadlines

First Year students can apply Early Decision (binding) or Early Action (non-binding) by Nov. 1, or Regular Decision by Jan. 15. Transfer students can apply Regular Decision by Feb. 15. A final admission decision will not be made until all appropriate materials have been submitted and reviewed by the admission and music committees.

NOTE: Students who consider Chapman University their first-choice school should apply Early Decision.

Late applications are reviewed on a space-available basis only. Please refer to the application checklist for more information on specified Admission deadline(s).

Common Application and Creative Supplement Deadlines:

  • FIRST YEAR Early Decision (binding): Thursday, November 1, 2018
  • FIRST YEAR Early Action (non-binding): Thursday, November 1, 2018
  • FIRST YEAR Regular Decision: Tuesday, January 15, 2019
  • TRANSFER Regular Admission: Friday, February 15, 2019

+ - Creative Supplement and In-Person Audition Requirements

The following items must be submitted to be considered for admission to the BM in Composition program:

  • Creative Supplement: This is your artistic portfolio reviewed by the faculty based on artistic talent and program readiness. Please be prepared to answer a few departmental questions.
  • Audition on primary instrument: Prospective students must schedule an audition appointment for their primary instrument (guitar, percussion, piano, strings, voice or woodwinds & brass) during the posted audition dates. BM in Composition applicants should refer to the audition requirements prescribed for your primary instrument. A brief interview will be included during your in-person audition.
  • Notated Scores & Recordings: Please submit notated scores and audio recordings of three to five original works.
    • NOTE: You will upload your notated scores and recordings once you have submitted your Creative Supplement. Following submission, you will be prompted to your Applicant Status Page where you can upload these materials.
  • Goal Statement: Describe your long-term personal and professional goals and discuss how the degree program and area of study you wish to pursue at Chapman will help you meet those goals.
  • Departmental Letter of Recommendation: The letter should come from your most recent music instructor or a professional with whom you have studied. You can request this recommendation through your applicant status page once you have submitted your Common Application. Your recommender will receive an email prompting him or her to submit a recommendation on your behalf. Keep in mind this letter of recommendation is specific to the Conservatory of Music and is separate from the letter(s) required by the Office of Admission.

+ - Creative Supplement and Audition Upload Requirements

  • Audition on primary instrument: BM in Composition applicants who choose to submit an uploaded audition video should refer to the audition requirements for their primary instrument (guitar, percussion, piano, strings, vocal or woodwinds & brass).
    • NOTE: Uploads should include an introduction and a brief discussion of your performing experience. Please be sure to address why you want to attend Chapman University.
    • Before beginning your performance, please speak the title of your piece and the name of the composer.
  • Notated Scores & Recordings: Please submit notated scores and audio recordings of three to five original works.
    • NOTE: Uploaded videos should include an introduction and a brief discussion of your performing experience. Please be sure to address why you want to attend Chapman University.

  • Letter of Recommendation: The letter should come from your most recent music instructor or a professional with whom you have worked. Once your Creative Supplement is submitted, you will be prompted to your applicant status page where you can invite your recommender to submit a letter of recommendation. Your recommender will receive an email prompting him or her to submit their recommendation on your behalf. Please keep in mind this letter of recommendation is specific to the Conservatory of Music. This is a separate recommendation from those required by the Office of Admission.
  • Potential Interview:  In addition to the above requirements, you may be asked for a personal interview (in-person or via phone) with the appropriate Area Director.  You will be contacted if an interview is required for admission.

+ - Schedule an Audition / Dates and Requirements

Once you submit your Creative Supplement, you will be directed to your applicant status page where you can register for an in-person audition.

Early Decision and Early Action applicants should register for November or December audition dates.

Regular Decision applicants should register for the January, February or March audition dates.

Please note audition dates will vary based on your instrument.
