Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Sociology is to produce graduates who will become sociologically informed global citizens. Our students will have knowledge and skills for critically analyzing every day human interactions, institutions, and cultures. They will also have a commitment to using their knowledge to ameliorate social inequalities and human sufferings. Our course offerings and assignments aim to empower our students to be active participants and leaders. This requires transforming our students into global citizens who are committed to preserving the human rights of all people, while respecting human diversity and the plurality of cultures and societies.

Educational Goals

  1. Teaching and Supporting Intellectual Growth in Students
Students will have access to faculty, administrators and staff for mentoring and advisement. They will work individually with faculty members to define their academic interests, explore career options, and set career goals.
  2. Student Writing and Oral Presentation
Students will demonstrate strong writing skills that will adhere to standards of academic integrity and conform to academic form and style. They will learn to present their ideas in oral and written presentations clearly and effectively.
  3. Knowledge of Discipline
Students will demonstrate understanding of sociological theory, history and terminology. They will demonstrate an understanding of broad range of institutions and social processes within the world societies, and they will demonstrate the ability to use sociological methods.
  4. Global Citizenship
We expect our students to have a global and cosmopolitan outlook: to view humanity as belonging to a single moral community. They will volunteer to serve in local communities and be exposed to settings that allow them to cross their cultural boundaries and comfort zones. They will be committed to social justice, aware of global issues and problems and willing to take responsibility for their own actions.
