
What is AKD?
AKD stands for Alpha Kappa Delta, a non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of Athropon Katamanthanein Diakonesein or "to investigate humanity for the purpose of service." AKD seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as well as will lead to improvement of the human condition.
AKD was founded at the University of Southern California in 1920 and became affiliated with the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967.
Why become a member?
The Society sponsors student paper contest, provides honoraria for initiation speakers, provides funds for student travel to regional sociology meetings, funds research symposia, sponsors a distinguished lecture series at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociology Association, contributes annually to the ASA Minority Scholarship Fund.

Assistant Professor of Sociology Lynn Horton horton@chapman.edu (714) 997-6976 Lynn Horton (Ph.D. University of Texas, Austin) is an Assistant Professor of Sociology. Her areas of interest include development, globalization, Latin America, social movements, gender, and qualitative research methods. Prior to joining the sociology faculty, she worked for non-governmental organizations on issues of human rights, sustainable development, gender equality, and the environment.
