Being a History major at Chapman...

The History major at Chapman University provides students with the knowledge and tools of history, but also provides a sense of roots, and a broader perspective on the diverse regions and peoples of the world. Training in history teaches students how to think, how to analyze different kinds of problems, and is a solid foundation for such careers as teaching, law, business, historic preservation or archival management.

There are two emphases that can be pursued in the History Department: American Studies or European Studies. American Studies is the study of the brief, but important, history of the United States. European History ranges from emergence of urban cultural in the river valleys of the ancient Near East to the modern era of the Western European Union and the collapse of Communism. In addition, the Department offers a wide range of courses in African, Asian, and Latin American History.

A major in History gives students an opportunity to work on projects associated with the Center for Cold War Studies and the Center for Holocaust Education. Internships are also possible with nearby museums and archives, including the Nixon Library and National Archives in Laguna Niguel. In addition, the History Department offers special study abroad opportunities to travel to London, Paris, and Rome.
