Professor Cumiford's course, The Roman Imperium, will be devoted to an examination of the Roman Empire at its center of periphery. The course will begin in Rome with a detailed excursion in the center of this ancient city, especially the Forum, Colosseum, and the Palatine Hill. Students will also visit the Capitoline Museum and the Catacombs of San Callisto. In addition, there will be day-long trips to Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome, Florence, Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius. In England students will walk the streets of ancient Londinium, viewing its walls as well as examining relevant artifacts at the British Museum and the Museum of London. There will be an outing to the Roman municipium at Verulamium (St. Albans) and students will spend a day at Aquae Sulis (Bath), the site of a natural mineral spring converted by the Romans into an ancient health spa. The course will conclude in Paris, ancient Lutetia, with a walking tour of the central city and visit to the Roman antiquities at the Louvre. Students will study Gallo-Roman remains at the Crypte Archeologique, the Cluny Museum and the Arenes de Lutece.
