Spanish Program

The Spanish Program at Chapman University is the largest program in the Department of Languages; more than 450 students are studying Spanish in any given semester with 30-40 students who chose Spanish as their major or minor.  Professors in the Spanish program are dedicated to the communicative approach to language teaching and emphasize student participation as an integral component in the process of language learning.  Class size is limited to 25 students allowing for more personalized instruction.

A wide variety of upper-division courses are offered in the Department of Languages, usually 3 or 4 per semester.  In addition to the introductory courses in linguistics, culture and literature, more advanced, specialized and innovative courses have been developed by professors Hodge, Loustau and Valenzuela such as: Spanish 440 Multicultural Approach to Spanish Bilingualism; Spanish 484 Twentieth Century Spanish Poetry and Drama, Literary Pictures; and Spanish 398 Twentieth Century Latin American Fiction, Journeys Across Memory.

Spanish is widely spoken here in California and throughout the United States.  The Spanish section is dedicated to promoting culturally and linguistically competent citizens in our multicultural and multilingual society.
