Housing Assignment Process
FYRE LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES
First Year Students will be placed in one of our new Living Learning Communities based on their Freshman Foundation Course (FFC). Once a student submits their enrollment deposit to the Admissions Office, they will receive a FFC preference survey via Chapman University email. Students will be able to indicate their top seven preferred Freshman Foundation Courses.
For more information on this exciting new structure of first year housing, please read a letter from our Associate Dean of Students, DeAnn Yocum Gaffney.

MATCHING ROOMMATES
Roommate matching is very important to us. With the introduction of a new housing software system for the 2009-2010 academic year, roommate matching will be automated based on a largely expanded set of living preference questions. All roommates, including those in triple assignments, are matched based upon the responses provided to the living preference questions that are a part of the online housing application. It is important to remember that the information we receive on each housing application is very subjective. For example, what you consider to be extremely neat may not be the same to your roommate. So as you get to know your roommate(s), please remember that a little conversation about living preferences at the beginning will go a long way toward establishing a solid roommate relationship.
TRIPLE ASSIGNMENTS
Due to the number of new student housing applications received each year, new students should expect to be in a triple assignment, meaning that there will be three residents per residence hall room. Residence halls where triple rooms will be located include Pralle-Sodaro, Henley, and Glass Hall. The Office of Housing ane Residence Life will try to "de-triple" rooms as soon as possible but it is likely rooms may remain tripled all year; either because of space constraints or by the choice of the three roommates. Please note that if it is determined that any student is attempting to force another student to move out, they will be referred to the conduct process and may be involuntarily moved.
BILLING FOR STUDENTS IN TRIPLE ASSIGNMENTS
Due to the fact that triple rooms may be de-tripled prior to the start of the semester, students initially assigned to a triple room will be billed a double rate until it is confirmed that the housing assignment will be a triple room to start the semester. At that time, the housing rate will be adjusted to reflect the triple occupancy. Residents will receive the triple rate only for the amount of time they are actually living in a tripled room. If a housing assignment is de-tripled the housing charges of the remaining two residents will be adjusted to the double rate, regardless of the reason the room is de-tripled. Even if an assignment is tripled at the start of the year, housing charges will always reflect the number of students residing in a given assignment. The Office of Housing and Residence Life does not require or guarantee that housing assignments that begin the academic year as a triple will remain a triple throughout the year. Residents may elect to move from a triple assignment if space is available. If two residents move out of a triple assignment; the remaining resident will be billed the double rate with the understanding that there is an assignable space within their housing assignment. As single assignments are only permitted under severe medical circumstances, residents with an assignable space within their room will NOT be billed the single rate. Finally, please note that moving from a triple to a double assignment may require that the resident move to a different residence hall.
FACEBOOK AND MYSPACE – A Word Of Caution Office of Housing and Residence Life Chapman University
WHILE FACEBOOK AND MYSPACE ARE HELPFUL RESOURCES FOR NEW STUDENTS, IT IS IMPORANT TO REMEMBER TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND WHEN CHECKING OUT FUTURE ROOMMATES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
- A student should not form pre-conceived judgements before he/she has met or communicated with his/her roommates. All students are much more than what is presented on a personal website.
- Emerging adults go through many changes as this is a time of intense personal growth. Students try out new ideas and explore new aspects of their identities. This is clearly evident in the personal websites of college students. Remember, what is true today may not be true tomorrow. students and parents should keep an open mind.
- One of the most important ways students learn in college is by interacting with those who may have different beliefs and perspectives. Students whould make the most of these opportunities as they arise - especially as concerning their roommates.
- Chapman University is committed to the principle that equal opportunities, including housing assignments, shall be afforded to all persons regardless of race, color, marital status, religious creed, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, handicap, age, disabled or Vietnam veteran status, or any other protected status, and that discrimination, either passive or active, will be neither condoned nor tolerated.
