Community Life in the residence communities at Chapman University

Living in a community means being responsible for one’s actions and being considerate of the needs of those living around you. Remember, the right to study and sleep always supersedes the privilege to entertain oneself. We must all be conscience of how our actions are affecting others. If you are having difficulties with your neighbors, we ask that you use the following steps to resolve those conflicts.

Too much noise?
1st - Go and speak with your neighbors and ask them to politely keep it down. Chances are that they may not realize that they are disturbing you. We must all participate in creating a community where everyone can be successful as a student and community member.

Equipment Check out
From 2:00pm - 10:00pm, pool cues, vacuums, plungers, and other items may be checked out from your hall office. You will need to leave your Student ID while you have the item checked out and there may be a time limit as to how long you can have the item checked out.
After 10:00pm, pool cues, vacuums, games, etc. may not be checked out; do not call the RA to check out items after 10:00pm. Any students who make calls to RA’s for assistance under false pretenses or for crank calls will be referred to the conduct system.

Civility and Respect
Another important aspect of community life is practicing civility and treating others with respect. The use of profanity, yelling, and name-calling when confronting a community member about their behavior is inappropriate and counterproductive to a successful resolution of disputes. Some important things to remember when addressing conflicts arise:
Our duty to be civil to others does not depend on whether we like them or not.
Civility requires that we sacrifice for strangers not just people that we know.
Civility has two parts, generosity, even when it is costly, and trust, even when there is a risk.
Civility creates not only a passive duty not to do harm, but an active duty to do good.
Civility assumes that we will disagree: it requires us not to mask our differences but to address them and resolve them respectfully.
Civility requires that we express ourselves in ways that demonstrate respect for others.
Civility requires that we listen to others and be open to the possibility that they are right and we are wrong.

Facilities and Maintenance Requests

If you would like to request that a facilities or maintenance issue be addressed by the University Facilities Staff, you need to complete a facilities work request form. These can be obtained in your hall/area office, in the Central Office of Residence Life, located on the second floor of the Davis Community Center. These should be completed with as much detail as possible so that the Facilities staff will know exactly what the problems is in your room/apartment/house. Some requests may be completed immediately; others may take longer in time to complete. If your work order request is not completed right away, please be patient and the Facilities staff will address the problem as soon as they can. To expatiate service submit all completed forms by noon Monday through Friday. Any plumbing requests (leaks, clogs, toilets, and drains) should be completed immediately
If you have an emergency facilities problem after normal business hours, there is an emergency facilities service for some problems. Non-emergencies will be addressed next business day in the normal fashion as outlined above. Below is the procedure to follow if you have a facilities emergency.

For a Clogged Toilet
1st - check out a plunger from your hall office (you will need to leave your student ID as the hall office while the plunger is checked out) and try to plunge the clog yourself. Students who do not attempt to unclog a toilet that they, their roommate, or a guest have clogged, before contacting facilities staff to clear the clog, will be charged $20.00 for each incident.
2nd - If you are not successful in unclogging the toilet on your own, contact the the hall office or RA on Duty in your hall.
From 2:00pm - 8:30 am, you can reach the hall office and/or RA on Duty:
In Braden - call 2716
In Morlan - call 6053
In Pralle-Sodaro - call 7645
In Henley - call 2715
In the Apartments/ Houses - call 6052 (532-6052, if calling from the houses.)
You should be able to reach the RA on Duty in the appropriate area by calling the number above.
If you are not able to reach an RA, contact Public Safety at ext. 6763.
Before 8:00pm - Contact Public Safety at ext. 6763 (997-6763, if calling from the houses).

Other Emergencies
The following is a list of emergencies that facilities will respond to after hours. If you are not sure, contact your hall office or RA on Duty and they will determine if after hour service is necessary:

  3. An alarm or alarm panel which is sounding and will not reset.
  4. Broken windows
  5. Doors that won’t lock/unlock
  6. Anything that might cause injury or property damage if left unattended.
