Blessed is the Match
Thursday September 15, 2011 - 7:00PM - Irvine Lecture Hall
A film by Roberta Grossman, 2008, 86 minutes
Narrated by Joan Allen, Blessed is the Match is the first documentary feature about Hannah Senesh, the World War II-era poet and diarist who became a paratrooper, resistance fighter and modern-day Joan of Arc. Safe in Palestine in 1944, Hannah joined a mission to rescue Hungary's Jews. Shockingly, it was the only outside rescue mission for Jews during the Holocaust.

A film by Marlon Riggs, 1994, 87 Minutes, Independent Television Services
The final film by filmmaker Marlon Riggs, Black Is... Black Ain't jumps into the middle of explosive debates over Black Identity. White Americans have always stereotyped African Americans, but the rigid definitions of "Blackness" that African Americans impose on each other have also been devastating. Riggs's camrera traverses the country, bringing us face to face with Black folks young and old, rich and poor, rural and urban, gay and straight, grappling with the paradox of numerous, often contested, definitions of Blackness.

Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story
Thursday December 1, 2011 - 7:00PM - Student Union Ballroom 119
A film by Jordan Mechner, 2003, 30 Minutes, Tiny Projects Production Company
In 1949, photographer Don Normark visited Chavez Ravine, a close-knit Mexican American village on a hill overlooking downtown Los Angeles. Enchanted, he stayed for a year and took hundreds of photographs documenting community life. But little did Normark know that he was capturing the last images of a place that was about to disappear. Fifty years later, filmmaker Jordan Mechner explores what happened. Narrated by Ceech Marin and scored by Ry Cooder and Lalo Guerrero, Chavez Ravine combines contemporary interviews with archival footage and Normark's haunting black-and-white photographs to reclaim and celebrate a beloved community of the past.
