The Chapman Next Step Social Justice Retreat is an annual

event that started in February 2009.

Chapman Next Step is a retreat model adapted from the Next Step Retreat at the University of Vermont that was collaboratively developed by numerous dedicated student affairs professionals, students, faculty and social justice educators hoping to make a positive impact in their community. There are similar programs that have taken place at Cal State Los Angeles, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, New York University, and Colorado State University where the retreat has its origins in the form of the Multicultural Leadership Retreat. Chapman Next Step gives students a forum to develop knowledge and skills to become better change agents and activists around areas of racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, ageism, religious discrimination, classism, identity and power differences.

To be an effective social justice activist, the Chapman Next Step Steering Committee believes that one must start by understanding our own identities and stories. Half of the retreat is spent in small guided groups exploring these concepts.

Through large and small group activities, participants explore ally development, stereotypes, privilege, oppression, coalition-building and grassroots organizing along with making community, organization, and personal connections.
