2006-2007 Schweitzer Scholarships
This year's Schweitzer Scholars are Shalani Lusk ’07 and Kelsea Ballantyne ’07. The scholarships are offered through the generosity of the Marjorie Mosher Schmidt Foundation in honor of Valerie Scudder, former Chapman trustee, to students demonstrating a record of both academic excellence and a commitment to a life of service. Both of this year's recipients volunteer for women's causes in India. Legal studies/political science major Lusk worked in Mumbai with an group that provides women free legal representation, and has presented papers on wife-death cases in India. She also helped found Chapman's Women of Wilkinson and volunteers for several social-cause groups. Business major Ballantyne, president of A.S., went to India after the 2004 tsunami to help women suffering from sexual slavery. She helped found the nonprofit Indian Princess Project, which helps former sex-workers learn to sew and sell "Princess PJs" in the United States. Read more about Shalani Lusk in an article titled A World of Opportunity in the fall 2006 issue of Chapman Magazine. |
