Was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Previously, he was a political cartoonist and an actor. He is a professor and holds a BA in Languages (with an emphasis on French translation), both a Masters and PhD in Brazilian Literature from the Federal University of Rio do Grande do Sul. He ran a module on short stories as part of the course for writers at the UNISINOS University between 2007 and 2010. His awards include: the Guimarães Rosa Award (1994), organized by Radio France Internationale, with the short story “Como se moesse ferro”; the Special jury award at Cidade de Amora Award (2000), with the short story “Ira das Mães”; the National Short Story Competition Josué Guimarães (2001), with the short stories: Teatro de Varais, café com açúcar: café com sal” and “Esconder vestígios”; the São Paulo Award (2009) with the novel A parede no escuro; and the Moacyr Scliar Award (2013), with the book Enquanto água. Published works include: Como se moesse ferro (Like Grinding Iron); Dentro do olho dentro (Inside the Inside Eye) (short stories); Se choverem pássaros (Should It Rain Birds) (short stories); A parede no escuro (The Wall in the Dark) (novel);Enquando água (As Water) and Terra avulsa (Single Earth) (novel).
