Important Info for Parents
Parent Volunteers Needed for Summer Events
Even though most students are home for the summer, the Chapman Parents Council continues to be busy preparing for the new academic year. Parents across the country can assist in a variety of ways. Consider hosting a reception in your home or assisting at one already scheduled in your area. If you are close to campus, you may want to assist with preparing welcome mailings or be on campus for new student move-in day and family orientation. We appreciate any assistance you would like to provide on behalf of the Chapman Parents Council. Learn More (PDF)

Save the Date for Family Weekend (10/3-5)
Family Weekend will be held Oct. 3-5, 2008. The weekend will be full of exciting events and opportunities to visit with your student, faculty, President Doti and other Chapman families. Plan ahead and don’t miss out!
American Celebration Opportunity Drawing Items Needed
American Celebration is Chapman’s largest scholarship fundraising event. It takes place November 7 & 8 and includes an opportunity raffle on Opening Night and a silent auction on Gala Night. You can help contribute to funding scholarships by donating items for these events. Consider dining gift cards, time-share weeks, sports and entertainment tickets; we can use them all and anything in between. If you would like to donate an item for the benefit of Chapman student scholarships, please contact Paula McCance at 714-628-7290 or Gemma Wolf at 714-745-3863.
In the Life of Your Student
Emotions arise about leaving friends and moving out of the room and hall where so much has happened during the past nine months. When students return home for the summer, the whole family will undergo adjustments. Parents and siblings have made changes during the year that the student doesn't’t fully understand. Old family patterns will be tested, and some may no longer work. Talk to your student about use of the car and about hours you expect him or her to be home for meals or for the night.
College seniors are constantly asked, "What will you do now?" This is a question that seems innocuous to the person asking, but it becomes intensely annoying to the graduate, who hears it from nearly everyone. Examples of good questions to ask your graduate include “What’s the most important thing you learned in college?” or “If you had it to do all over, would you change anything about your college experience?” For graduates who do not already have jobs, this can be a trying time. They may question their choice of majors and worry about beginning to pay back student loans.
A Walk through Chapman History
After the war, Chapman's student population increased, and the college began looking for additional space. When the Orange Unified School District announced plans to build a new high school, Chapman purchased the old Orange Union High School campus located at Glassell and Palm, the current location of the university. Chapman moved from Los Angeles to the city of Orange in 1954, becoming the first accredited four-year college in Orange County. Built in 1904, the old high school facility is one of the few remaining examples of neoclassical architecture in Southern California. Currently, five of Chapman's buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
