Chapman Has Emergency Plan in Place
Parents of college students naturally grow extremely concerned when they hear of incidents like the terrible Virginia Tech shootings or Thursday’s fatal shootings on the campus of Northern Illinois University.  Universities, by their very nature, are open and vulnerable to those who would exploit the freedoms that we cherish.   Chapman University has a strong emergency plan in place, and conducts regular exercises with our Public Safety department and campus emergency coordinators.   Chapman’s Public Safety department has close ties with the Orange Police Department and Orange Fire Department, which can respond in force within minutes due to Chapman’s location in the heart of the city.

In the highly unlikely event of an emergency situation connected to a shooting, earthquake, fire or other event, Chapman University is part of a countywide disaster preparedness response plan that includes an on-campus communications/alert system, evacuation plans, a partnership with City of Orange police and fire departments, and agreements with local Red Cross shelters to temporarily house evacuees.  More than 50 Chapman employees are ready to serve as on-campus Emergency Operations Center volunteers, if needed, and are trained as zone captains and building coordinators to assist campus and local police and fire crews in emergency and evacuation proceedings.   Any campus-wide emergency notices will be posted and updated on the Chapman University homepage at www.chapman.edu.

Grandparents Club Meeting (3/6)
Meet Chapman University president and Economics professor Dr. Jim Doti as he shares the private library of noted fellow economist and Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Milton Friedman. The Town and Gown luncheon will be featuring Daniel Alfred Wachs, the assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France and the Rotterdam Philharmonic also serves as Chapman’s new music director of instrumental studies at the newly formed College of Performing Arts. He will discuss the evolution of chamber music. Joining him will be Chapman’s finest student musicians. Grandparents Club events are free, Town & Gown Lunch is $30. Registration and advanced payment is required.

In the Life of Your Student
The semester is still new, and it feels like there's plenty of time to get things done. Students tend to spend significant time with friends, and they may be a bit lax about their coursework. Students who think they need to find off-campus housing for next year may begin to panic when they can't find openings for fall or if they are having trouble selecting roommates. This can be a time when students start thinking about upcoming "escapes" such as spring break or summer travel.

A Walk through Chapman History
Chapman University was founded as Hesperian College by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Woodland, CA, on March 4, 1861. Unfortunately, around the turn of the century, as California started offering free public education, many private schools were forced to close, including Hesperian in 1895. Remaining assets were transferred to a new Disciples college in Los Angeles. The principal benefactor for the school was Charles Clarke Chapman, an Illinois native who found great success in Southern California as a real estate investor, producer and marketer of Valencia oranges, as well as a politician and avid supporter of the Disciples. Stay tuned for more in next month's issue!
