Hosts Needed for 2008 Summer Welcome Receptions
We are looking for family homes across the country to welcome the new Fall 2008 students and their families by hosting informal receptions. This is a wonderful way to volunteer on behalf of the Chapman Parents Council.  Receptions are typically held in June and July. If you would like to host a reception, or would just like to lend a helping hand with welcome efforts in your home city, please contact Paula McCance P ‘03,‘07 at (714) 628-7290 or mccance@chapman.edu.

In the Life of Your Student
Boredom sets in as the winter break continues and students remain at home. Students may experience disappointment, relief, or a mixture of both regarding first semester grades mixed with enthusiasm for the upcoming spring semester. Seniors may experience frustration over questions from family and friends about post-graduation plans. As friends from home start back to their colleges, boredom is likely to set in. The break is a good time to begin talking to students about their living plans for next year. If students are considering off campus housing, parents should talk to their students about the responsibilities of apartment living including cooking, cleaning, contracts, and roommate relationships.

Tips for New Chapman Parents: Benefits of Extracurricular Activities
Participating in Extracurricular activities is a big part of your student's college experience and there are endless benefits for those who choose to participate. Aside from making friends, extracurricular activities help students to learn how to organize their time, have a break during stressful days, and experience a sense of belonging in the Chapman community. Participating in extracurricular activities also helps students to develop a number of marketable organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills that will be useful to them in real world situations. It is especially helpful if students can participate in activities that allow them to apply skills that they have learned in the classroom; for example, an education major might benefit from becoming a tutor. Chapman has a wide variety of student clubs and organizations to offer so all students can find their niche. Other great ways to get involved include volunteering in the local community and working on-campus in a wide variety of positions that are available. On-campus jobs provide great experience to students and are often more flexible with the student's academic schedule and priorities than an off-campus job. Encourage your student to take advantage of all that Chapman has to offer.

Student Spotlight: Matt Hall '08
After two years of work, including countless hours of filming in the Pacific Ocean, Chapman Student Matt Hall is putting the finishing touches on his debut feature film, "Dark Horizon". The project, a post-apocalyptic adventure movie which Hall directed and stars in, is set for a DVD release this summer with a distribution deal in the works. The film was filmed aboard a forty-foot sailing vessel out of the Long Beach Harbor. It features elaborate stunt sequences, a shark attack, buried treasure, and a sword fight, among other cinematic fireworks. The production has been aided by such Hollywood talent as the weapon and sword choreographers from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, experienced film actors, and Drew Struzan, the artist behind the movie posters for the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films who signed on to design the poster for "Dark Horizon," as well.
