The Chapman Parents Council would like to wish you a wonderful summer as we come to the end of another great year at Chapman University. Pay close attention to the volunteer opportunities that are scheduled for this summer! Sign up and help us welcome incoming freshman and their parents as they join the Chapman family. Commencement Information
Commencement is on May 19 on the Chapman University campus. Parents can find information online to help plan details such as deadlines, parking, seating, gifts and after-parties! For more information, visit the commencement web site. For family and friends not able to travel to Orange County to attend Commencement, there will be a web broadcast on the Chapman web page. On Commencement Day, go to the Chapman Home Page and click on the webcast link to connect.

Senior Class Gift
The Class of 2007 will be purchasing a large specimen tree that will serve as a landmark centerpiece to the new Central Quad located between Beckman Hall and the Leatherby Libraries. The tree will be named the "Elie Wiesel Tree" in honor of Holocaust survivor and Nobel-prize winning author, who visited the campus in 2005. Participation in class activities and the purchase of a designated 2007 Chapman sweatshirt in the Agora Gift Shop insure the successful outcome of the campaign. In addition, donations of any size are gratefully welcomed. For more information, please contact the Alumni Office at (714) 997-6681.

Class of 2007 T-Shirts
The class of 2007 T-Shirts will be available for purchase at the commencement ceremony. Be sure to pick one up for your graduate! The back of the T-Shirt lists all the names of the 2007 graduates. Click here (PDF) to preview an image of the back of the T-Shirt.

Parents Council Summer Volunteer Opportunities
Parent volunteers are needed for this summer. Take this opportunity to assist in welcoming new Chapman families during events such as summer welcome receptions, freshman summer registration and new student move-in day. Meet fellow Chapman families and stay connected. Learn More (PDF)

Reminder! Resident Check-Out
Resident students must check out 24 hours after their last final or by 5pm on Friday, May 18, whichever comes first. Graduating students must vacate by 12 noon on Monday, May 21.

Summer Storage Options
For out of area students, there are many storage options. You might consider Valet Today Campus a full service shipping, storage, and delivery vendor. There are also storage only facilities in the local area. To make summer storage more affordable, we suggest that students share a storage space with friends and split the cost. Most facilities even offer specials and discounts to Chapman students.

Summer Welcome Receptions
Here is a great opportunity for out of area parents to get involved this summer. Welcome receptions will be held in different cities across the country to welcome new students and their families that will be joining the Chapman family this fall. Learn More

Save the Date for Family Weekend (10/5-6)
Family Weekend will be held Oct. 5-6, 2007. The weekend will be full of exciting events and opportunities to visit with your student, faculty, President Doti and other Chapman families. Plan ahead and don’t miss out!

Business Office Offers E-services
Take advantage of Chapman’s online e-pay service when making monthly tuition payments.You will need to have your student create an Authorized User account to set up your e-bill and e-pay access. Login information will be provided to you via e-mail. Tutorials are posted online to help you learn how to log on, create your payment profile, view monthly statements, and track your payments. This month, we invite you to share how you assist your student with financial expenses such as providing them with spending money and rent. We look forward to reading your responses! Take the Survey

Finals Schedule
The schedule for spring finals is posted online. Check to see what dates your student is testing and when they will officially be done with the 2006-2007 school year! Remember, other than graduating seniors, residents must move out within 24 hours of their last final. Learn More

Campus News and Updates

Students Kelsea Ballantyne and Zach Bloomfield Receive Fulbright
Kelsea Ballantyne and Zach Bloomfield are the first Chapman students to receive Fulbright Scholarship. Ballantyne will be moving to India to study the effects of globalization on women in private and social spheres. Bloomfield will be moving to Tunisia to learn French and Arabic in order to study the country’s economic development and it’s influence on the experiences of young men in a subsidized job market. Chapman Professor Appears in Albert Schweitzer Film
Dr. Marvin Meyer appears as an expert commentator on the new one-hour TV movie Schweitzer: Called to Africa. It’s a dramatized narrative depicting the legendary humanitarian and Nobel winner, who left his life as a doctor, musician and theologian in Europe to serve the sick in equatorial Africa. This film is a great way to learn more about the man who is looked to as Chapman’s spiritual exemplar. Learn More

Library Dedication and Haudenosaunee Culture Celebration
Presented by the Leatherby Libraries, the colloquium “Culture of the Haudenosaunee”
featured a panel of leading academics who presented talks on various aspects of Haudenosaunee (also known as Iroquois) culture and civilization. The day concluded with the official dedication of the Frank Mt. Pleasant Library of Special Collections and Archives on the fourth floor of the Leatherby Libraries. Read More (PDF)

Food Science Triumph in College Bowl
Congratulations Danae Lucas (captain), Chelsea Fagundes, Paolo Beltran, Emily Doti, Amanda Teets and advisor Dr. Lilian Were for winning the Western Regional College Bowl Competition in Provo, UT on April 7, 2007. Chapman beat out many strong teams to advance to the national IFT College Bowl competition in Chicago this summer. Learn More

Student Spotlight: Kevin Tarbell ‘09
Congratulations to Kevin Tarbell, the new Associated Students President! Elections took place in April and Tarbell won by a landslide with 701 votes. His opponent Michael Ayers had a final count of 439 votes. Tarbell believes that he won the election because of his well rounded experience in AS. During his term, Tarbell plans to close gaps between bodies on campus such as Res Life and Associated Students, to create a more unified campus. Tarbell intends to dedicate his summer to preparing for his presidency. Learn More (PDF)

Faculty Spotlight: Claudine Jaenichen
Claudine Jaenichen , assistant professor of art in the graphic design program, was accepted in a highly prestigious fellows program as an Associate Research Fellow for the Communication Research Institute, an international organization undertaking practical research in information design that can lead to the highest quality of communication between institutions and people. Only five applicants were accepted worldwide and she was one of two applicants chosen from the UnitedStates. Learn More

Alumni Spotlight: Jeff Cole '01
Jeff Cole serves on the Board of Directors of Chapman University’s Alumni Association, and is actively involved in the community at large.  He states that his purpose in serving the Board is “to help strengthen the bond among alumni at an early stage.” Jeff Cole is an award-winning writer, director, and videographer who has a great interest in promotional, commercial, and documentary production.  Jeff has been recognized with over a dozen national awards, while competing with top industry professionals. Athletics

Chapman Baseball Will Host West Region Playoffs As No. 1 Seed
Chapman University will be the host for the regional playoffs for the fifth consecutive year, while the Panthers will be the No. 1 seed in the seven-team tournament. Chapman was a perfect 5-0 against the West Region field this season, including a three-game sweep over George Fox on the final weekend of the regular season earlier this month. Good luck Panthers! Chapman Softball Lands Six Players on All-West Region Team
Congratulations to Maggie Wilder, Erin Dudzinski, Sandra Burns, Amanda Campbell, Catherine Hall, and Melanie Villarroel! These six Chapman players were named to the Louisville Slugger All-West Region as voted on by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. These six players will join an exclusive list of 69 Panther softball players that have earned All-Region Honors under head Coach Janet Lloyd since 1995. Learn More

Your Support Makes a Difference

Join the Chapman Alumni Association's Team in Relay for Life (6/2-3)
Relay for Life is an overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivors and to raise money to help the American Cancer Society. During the event, the Chapman Alumni Team will gather at Irvine Valley College to take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times during this 24-hour relay.

Ways to Honor Your Graduate
