Housing Survey In our February edition of the Chapman Parent Connection e-newsletter, we asked all of you to participate in a survey to help us find out what types of housing you were interested in and what information you wanted to know more about. Based on the results from the survey, the Chapman Parents Council and Residence Life were able to tailor a program that would meet the needs of parents’ questions with regard to housing options. We have posted the survey results so you can view them as well. Learn More
On-Campus Housing Update Due to the fact that Braden Hall will be razed this summer to make way for a brand new housing facility, opening Fall 2009, there will be a shortage of beds. Upon completion, the new housing facility will significantly increase the number of beds, and will also have a brand new dining facility to replace the current Betty Hutton Williams Dining Colonnade in Argyros Forum. Due to the loss of beds, not everyone who re-applies to live on-campus next year will be guaranteed housing; some students will have to resort to off-campus housing. Priority numbers will be assigned based on class standing (sophomore, junior, and senior) and the city/state listed in the student's permanent address. For apartments, out of area juniors and seniors will have priority over in area juniors and seniors. For the residence halls, all sophomores have first priority, out of area juniors and seniors have second priority, and in area juniors and seniors have third priority. To help students with housing off-campus, Chapman is seeking partnership with a local hotel to serve as contingency housing. Students who choose to live in the hotel will still be billed as a “Chapman Resident” although the hotel will be located off campus. There are no hotels within walking distance of the campus so students who choose to reside at this location will have to have a car. Be aware that the final date to turn in the housing application form and housing deposit is March 23rd, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. More information regarding 2007-2008 on-campus housing with important dates and deadlines, as well as the details of the housing selection process can be found on the Chapman Residence Life website. Rentals in Orange If you plan on, or are considering renting an off campus house or apartment for your student, there is information to be aware of when searching for rentals such as key terms to know, language of rental agreements and do’s and don’ts as referenced in CA Tennants: A Guide to Residential Tenants’ and Landlords’ Rights and Responsibilities (PDF). Many independent renters in Orange will not to rent to college students, so having good communication with the landlords is important. Make sure that they know you are renting the home or apartment for your student. We recommend that you do your homework and start looking for places early as houses are very popular among Chapman students. Also to help you, we have compiled a partial list of some apartment complexes (PDF) that are popular with Chapman students. See List (PDF)
Property Management Sources Arnel property managers from two local properties Walnut East (6.8 miles from campus) and Hampton Pointe (2.8 miles from campus) were present at the meeting to provide information on apartment renting/leasing. It was mentioned that parents are not required to sign the lease with their students for Arnel property rentals, however they recommend that parents sign-on with their students, regardless. Chapman University staff and students may benefit from a 5% discount when renting/leasing with Arnel. (Full disclosure was given that Arnel is owned by alumnus and trustee to Chapman University, George L. Argyros ’59.) Learn More
Buying property in Orange If you are interested in buying property, we have compiled a list of resources, websites, as well as some “Do’s and Don’ts” in relation to buying property in Orange (PDF). There are many legal issues involved with buying property in Orange as well. If you are planning on buying a house for your students and his or her friends to live in, you need be aware of the City of Orange Municipal Code regarding definitions of family occupancy versus boarding house occupancy. A handout is available that covers this issue to help you avoid a potential conflict. See Resources (PDF)
