Hosts Needed for Summer Welcome Receptions
It’s already time to plan for the class of 2011, and Chapman is looking for families who would like to welcome next year’s new students by hosting an informal reception in their home next summer. CAMPUS NEWS AND UPDATES

Integrated Five-Year Undergraduate MBA Program
Chapman University is now offering an integrated five-year Undergraduate MBA Program to Chapman undergraduates from all majors. Students who have completed 75 units or more of their undergraduate coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply for the program. Applications can be submitted anytime between February 1st and May 1st during the student’s junior year. Learn More (PDF)

Shipboard Education Returns to Chapman After 31 Years
Chapman has signed an affiliation agreement with the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) to begin a Semester at Sea program starting in 2007 – marking the return of a shipboard program to the university after 31 years. Although World Campus Afloat ended for the university in 1975, two people at Chapman felt strongly that the program should somehow continue. So Dr. M.A. Griffiths and Dr. John P. Tymitz, with the backing of international banker and philanthropist C.Y. Tung, set up the nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education and kept the ship, the S.S. Universe, sailing as a floating campus. Learn More (PDF)

Student Spotlight: Sarah Smetana '09
It must have been a refreshing read for the Admissions staff when an application from Sarah Smetana ’09 was plucked up out of a heap of Chapman hopefuls. The ambitious sophomore who plays on the women’s tennis team, “adores the rain,” and “(hasn’t) had a grade below an A since (she) was a sophomore in high school” had already landed the prestigious Irvine Company Scholarship, an annual honor bestowed upon “one boy and one girl from every high school on The Irvine Company’s land based on academic achievements, extracurricular activities, etc.” Sarah’s passion for her studies, carried over from her high school days, comes as a welcome addition to the student body. Learn More

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Richard Turner, Professor of Art
Dr. Richard Turner is an excellent example of the “live what you teach” mantra that Chapman’s diverse faculty strives to abide. As a professor of the fine arts, Dr. Turner blends his worldly outlook on research and teaching (“the interplay of the two is what I value most”) and his own personal experience with “the arts and cultures of Asia.” Growing up in Saigon, he developed an early appreciation for painting and sculpture, turning out Pollock replicas in a makeshift studio he created in one of the empty rooms of his parents’ villa. Learn More

Alumni Spotlight: Theresa Schwegel ‘02
While Chapman does pride itself on turning out excellently-qualified individuals into the modern workplace, it is a rare occurrence when a young alumna nets the Edgar Allen Poe award for her debut novel almost immediately after graduation. With the tour of her second book already underway, Theresa Schwegel ’02 is a testament to the self-motivated woman, passionate about her career in literature and constantly challenging herself to “expand (her) horizons in the crime-fiction landscape.” Learn More

Note: Theresa Schwegel will be signing copies of her second novel, Probable Cause, at Book Carnival in Orange, Calif., on Jan. 28, 2007, at 1 p.m. Visit her Web site for other upcoming tour dates nationwide at www.theresaschwegel.com.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Interested in Providing an Internship to a Chapman Student?
If your business or organization is in need of a few extra hands, look no further than Chapman’s student body! Hundreds of students seek out both paid and unpaid internships each semester, hoping to gain valuable real world experience in a wide variety of fields. If you are interested in taking a few bright, eager minds under your wing, please contact Kristy Beavers from the Career Development Center at (714) 744-7980 or kbeavers@chapman.edu.

Developing Stars, Study, and Sports at Chapman
What do stars, studying and sports have in common at Chapman this fall? All three are new additions to the Chapman campus. With the opening of Marion Knott Studios (stars) and the David Wilson Athletic Field (sports), our campus has seen tremendous change this academic year, and the addition of the first research-oriented Ph.D. program (study) is yet another testament to Chapman’s unique commitment to its students. This new, exciting growth would not be possible without donors who decided to make Chapman a part of their legacies. If you would like to make Chapman a part of your legacy through an estate gift that will affect students for generations to come, contact Susan Berkman, Director of Development, Planned Giving and Major Gifts, at (714) 628-2518 or berkman@chapman.edu.
