Student Psychological Counseling Services Update
Due to the increased need for appointments, SPCS will be offering a maximum of eight sessions per academic year to students requesting services. Any student who has been on psychiatric medications should make sure they have a local psychiatrist and plan to obtain their medications, as SPCS does not have a psychiatrist on staff. Here are some recommendations regarding students with Mental Health Histories (PDF) and students planning to Study Abroad (PDF). A little preparation goes a long way in making sure that students’ physical and mental health continue to be supported and managed for a well-adjusted and happy experience in college. Learn More

Tips for New Chapman Parents!
Last month we asked returning parents to fill out a survey asking them to share tips about checking in with their son or daughter. Over half voted that a phone call is the best method of communication to use when checking in with your student, and the majority voted that it is best to check in once a week. Many parents shared that they have set aside a specific day and time to check in with their student each week. Take a look at the results and read parent responses yourself, they have some great advice and tips to share! View Results

Onnolee Elliott has traveled to every continent and ocean on Earth to study plant and animal life. Elliott graduated with a master’s in chemistry from Chapman in 1964, has blazed an intrepid trail throughout her life. “When I was young, I would sit on the fender and help my dad repair his car,” she says. “I wanted to be an engineer, but girls weren’t allowed to be engineers in the 1940s.” So instead, Elliott studied the sciences, and was often the only female in the classroom. “At the time, it wasn’t easy for a woman,” she says of her studies, so she worked very hard both in school and as a medical technologist to advance the cause of women in a male-dominated industry.
