A Letter from President Doti
A few weeks ago, President Jim Doti presented his research results that he initially reported in an article, “Is Higher Education Becoming a Commodity,” published in the November 2004 Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management. This presentation attracted students’ attention and created anxiety about future trends in tuition and financial aid at Chapman University. Hosts Needed for 2008 Summer Welcome Receptions
It’s not too early to plan for the class of 2012, and Chapman is looking for families who would like to welcome next year’s new students and their families by hosting an informal reception in their home. If you are not close to campus, this is a wonderful way to volunteer on behalf of the Chapman Parents Council. Receptions are typically held in June and July each summer outside of Orange County. If you would like to host a reception, or would just like to lend a helping hand with welcome efforts in your home town, please contact Paula McCance P’03,‘07 at (714) 628-7290 or mccance@chapman.edu.

In the Life of Your Student
Mid-term grades are in, and students now know where they stand in their classes. Pressure builds surrounding coursework and other activities in addition to the excitement and anxiety about going home for Thanksgiving. Coursework, tests, and papers intensify right before and right after Thanksgiving, with finals happening only two weeks after students return from Thanksgiving break. For seniors, deadlines for graduate school exams and applications loom; those who are looking for jobs after graduation should be working with their advisors or the Career Development Center to find job leads. With the appoaching holidays, students are eager to buy gifts for friends and family and they may experience financial strain due to a lack of financial experience.
Home for the Holidays: Preparing for your Student's Return
Parents should talk to their student before Thanksgiving break to find out what plans they may have made with friends and let him or her know what family obligations will require their presence. Parents can ask, before the student comes home, if
there are any changes or new developments they might need to know such as changes in diet or appearance. If parents have made any dramatic changes, they
should tell their student in advance as well. If your student leaves home to spend time with friends, do not be offended or upset. It is important to keep in mind that your student will need some time with high school friends as well as time to explore their hometown that they have been away from for so long.

Alumni Spotlight: Frank Delgadillo '96
While at Chapman, Delgadillo began his clothing line in 1994. He
didn’t want to start by making a conventional Tshirt,
so he created a pair of denim jeans, which
cost him $3,500. After accumulating a collection of 300 pants
and tees to match, Delgadillo began selling his
clothes at Hot Skates in Orange on Chapman
Avenue. He also handed out his clothes to his
friends who snowboard and skateboard. Delgadillo is busy, but he continues to be active
with Chapman. He is a member of Chapman’s
Alumni Association Board, and received
the Young Alumnus Award, which highlights
students who have gone on to promising careers.
