Ruby Cheng, D.M.A.

Ruby Cheng is the recipient of numerous top prizes and awards including the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, Southwestern Youth Music Festival, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Bronislaw Kaper Awards. She has also been awarded the Harvey Fellowship of the Mustard Seed Foundation and the Edna and Yu-Shan Han Scholarship; she was also a finalist in the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Since her orchestral debut at age nine, pianist Ruby Cheng has collaborated with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, also appearing as soloist with the Brentwood-Westwood Symphony, the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra, and the Music Academy of the West Festival Orchestra. At the age of fifteen, Ms. Cheng performed the Brahms Piano Concerto no. 1 with the U.C.L.A. Symphony. Her performances have been broadcast on Santa Barbara’s KDB 93.7 classical radio. In addition to numerous orchestral performances, Ms. Cheng has been an active collaborator in chamber music at distinguished festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Sarasota, Banff Centre for the Arts, and the Focus! Festival at the Juilliard School. She has performed chamber music concerts throughout North America, including the Wednesday at One series at Alice Tully Hall and the Juilliard Theater in New York City, Van Wezel Auditorium in Florida, Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, California, and Rolston Hall in Alberta, Canada. As a member of the Alcantara Piano Quartet, she was a finalist in the 2007 Coleman National Chamber Music Competition, and semi-finalist in the 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Ms. Cheng holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in piano performance from the Juilliard School where she studied with Jerome Lowenthal, and earned her doctoral degree from U.C.L.A. with Walter Ponce. |
