KEYBOARD DEPARTMENT RULES

New Students:
•Any new student who does not audition will not receive a spot in a piano section that year, and must come audition the next year.
•A student requesting to change teachers must first obtain permission from his/her teacher.

Piano Majors:
•Piano majors are required to pass at a jury or recital any etude.
•All majors are required to perform two (2) pieces at the end of the semester jury/and or recital.

Music Majors:

Proficiency Changes:
•For music majors:
•All music majors must pass your proficiency by the end of the  second year of piano.
•All majors are required to play two (2) pieces at the end of the semester in recital or jury.
•Scales will now be 2 octaves instead of 4 octaves.
•As part of the 2 piece requirement at each jury/and or recital, required pieces include: contrapuntal piece and an accompaniment piece (piano duet, vocal, or instrumental). The aim of the accompanimental requirement is for the general music major to become familiar with how it is to act on the accompanying aspect of music, as they are sure to face that in the real world. We will help the student pick an accompaniment part to play (many teachers at other schools use one of the levels of Suzuki, depending on the student's capabilities, but you may use what you think is best for the student). It is the students’ responsibility to find a friend to rehearse and attend their jury—Louise Thomas and the collaborative department have nothing to do with this proficiency requirement, and the students should not ask her for instrumentalists. Students MAY NOT accompany themselves.
•All other requirements stay the same.
•The new proficiency requirements apply to those students starting school in fall 07.

NON-Music Majors:
•Non-music majors as well as music majors who have passed the proficiency do not have to play in the jury/end of year recital, unless they wish to, for whatever reason. Instead, the midterm for non-majors is to attend a classical concert and submit a review. For the final, the teacher may use the last lesson as a private jury or have a small studio recital.
