Registration Procedures

Registering for Classes

Registration for the fall semester is conducted in June; registration for the spring semester is conducted in November. Students eligible to graduate in January, May or August of that academic year are given priority registration. All other students register on a first come first served basis. Incoming 1L students will be registered by the Registrar for their first year of study and do not need to complete a registration form. All registration must be completed by the given deadline as set out in each semester's registration packet. Continuing students who submit materials after that date will be assessed a $250.00 late registration fee. If you plan to register for more than sixteen (16) credits or fewer than eight (8) credits, you must have the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (Dean Timothy Canova) approve and sign your registration form.

Registration for Summer Session begins in April. There is no priority for summer session; registration will be on a "first come, first served" basis. Chapman University School of Law welcomes students visiting from ABA approved and state bar approved institutions. Visiting students must complete the Summer Session Application for Visiting Students and must provide a letter of good standing from the Dean or Registrar of their home institution. Visiting students must submit a $760.00 deposit with the application. The tuition balance must be paid in full by the first week of classes. The Externship course is not available to visiting students.

Students are responsible for making certain they have satisfied the required prerequisites for taking a class. Instructor permission is required for Externship, Appellate Law Clinic, Law Review, Nexus Law Journal and Competitions. These courses will not be entered into the registration system until the necessary approval has been obtained. You may submit your registration in any of the following ways: 1) in person, Monday - Friday 9:00-5:00; 2) by email to misles@chapman.edu, 3) by fax to (714) 628-2570. Telephone registration is NOT accepted.

American Bar Association Standards

Limit on Employment: American Bar Association Standards require full-time students to devote substantially all working hours to the study of law. Students shall not engage in remunerative employment for more than 20 hours per week, whether outside or inside the law school. If you have registered for 12 or more credit hours you must complete the Work Certification Form.

Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance is necessary to satisfy residence and class hour requirements. Students are required to attend class meetings in the courses for which they have registered, and to be prepared to participate in the class discussion. Any student who has been absent from more than 20% of class meetings shall not further participate in class, shall not be allowed to sit for the final examination, and shall be given a grade of 'FW.' [Student Handbook §4.2.3.8] Students are cautioned that individual faculty may impose a higher attendance standard.

JD/MBA Students

Students planning to undertake this joint degree program must schedule a consultation with Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Tim Canova. Those admitted to the program must furnish a copy of their MBA admission letter to the law school Registrar for the student file.

Examination Schedule

The examination schedule is included with the class schedule. Take it into account when choosing your courses. As a reminder, the Student Handbook states: "If the examination schedule is pre-published with the registration materials, then no conflict shall exist."

If illness, family emergency or other catastrophic event prevents your taking an examination at the scheduled time, notify the office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs ([714] 628-2516), immediately and in advance, if possible. Verification of illness or emergency should be obtained by the student if possible. Contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs as soon as possible to make arrangements to take the examinations at a later date. A student may be granted a departure from the examination schedule by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Whenever possible, the request for a departure from the examination schedule shall be accompanied by objective evidence, or if then unavailable, in a reasonable time thereafter. For the complete text of the examination policies, please consult your Student Handbook [§4.2.3.9]. If you have a disability that requires accommodation during exams, please notify the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs as soon as possible.

Competition Credit

The faculty has enacted new policy regarding competition credits. For example, if in October, you elect to participate in a competition and you failed to register for the credit by the end of the add period back in August, you will not receive credit for that competition. In addition, you must have approval from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (Timothy Canova) to exceed 16 credits in any semester.

Directed Research

Credit is available to 2-4Ls only to study and research topics which are not provided for by regular curricular offerings. To register for Directed Research, students must complete a Directed Research form and submit the completed form to the Registrar's Office for processing. The signatures of the supervising full-time professor and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs are required. The Directed Research form must be submitted no later than the designated add/drop date for that semester. Students are limited to two directed research courses during their course of study at Chapman. Each can be taken for 1 to 3 credits.

Withdrawing from Classes

Students wishing to drop a class during the first week of classes may do so by completing a Registration and Change Form and submitting it to the Registrar's Office. Courses dropped before the beginning of the second week of classes will not appear on the student's transcript. Students who withdraw from classes after the first week will receive a 'W' on their transcripts. Students wishing to withdraw from classes between the third and eighth weeks of the semester must obtain the approval of the instructor. Students may withdraw after the eighth Friday upon showing good cause and obtaining the approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw from a class. Failure to attend a class does not constitute withdrawal. Students who stop attending a class or classes without submitting a Registration and Change Form will be held academically and financially liable and will receive grades of 'FW' (failure to withdraw).

Students wishing to withdraw from the School of Law must receive the approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and complete an exit interview with the Financial Aid office if any financial assistance, including scholarships, is being received.
