Chapman Moot Court Team Wins Regional Championship at NAAC

March 2008 – The moot court team of Katia Benthale, Rob Webster, and Matt Wechter are the 2008 regional champions of the National Appellate Advocacy Competition – Las Vegas Region (the largest region in the country).  NAAC is widely considered to be the largest and most prestigious moot court competition in the country, with 178 teams participating this year alone.  Chapman has now won back-to-back championships (the team of Marcus Garrett, Paige Gosney, and Katia Benthale took home the hardware in 2007).  Also, the team of Sarah Mitchell, Arlinda Witko, and Brandon Sylvia (brief writer) advanced to the semi-finals, marking the first time in Chapman history that both teams advanced to the NAAC semi-finals.  Finally, Katia Benthale was recognized as the region’s Third Best Oralist, adding to her impressive list of individual awards. Katia, Rob, and Matt will compete at the national finals in Chicago April 3rd through the 5th.  Special thanks to Professor Nancy Schultz for her guidence and leadership in leading the Chapman NAAC teams to back-to-back regional championships.

Moot Court Board Welcomes New Members

August 2007 - The Executive Board has completed its 2007 In-House Competition and is pleased to welcome the following members to the Board:  Jessica Blair, Colin Cavanaugh, Andrew Dualan, Michael Larkin, Andrew Last, and Arlinda Witko.  The Board also welcomes this year’s Golden Quill winners Shelley Doi and Ruby Simjee.

Elite Eight Invited to Join the Board

April 2007 - After emerging from a field of over 200 students, eight 1Ls were given invitations to join the Moot Court Board.  Congratulations to Angelique Batsel, Alex Brewshaugh, Jenos Firouzman, Tracy Guenther, William Nones, Brian Thomley, Jessica Tincopa, and Matt Wechter.  William Nones (for the Plaintiff) and Matt Wechter (for the Defendant) were given the Rutan & Tucker Golden Gavel Awards. William Nones would add to his hardware by winning the Best Oralist Award.  Special thanks to the local judges, lawyers, professors, and Board members who helped judge the competition.

Moot Court Members Elect New Executive Board

April 2007 – Moot Court members have elected a new Executive Board for the upcoming academic year.  The Board will be represented by Katia Benthale (President), Sarah Mitchell (Vice President), Rob Webster (In-House Competitions Chair), Luigi Monteleone (Administrative Chair), David Clark (Fall Competitions Chair), and Michael Gates (Spring Competitions Chair.  As always, the Board will led by faculty advisor Professor Nancy Schultz.  Special acknowledgement to the 2006/2007 Executive Board (Marcus Garrett, Andy Bugman, Tom Vogele, Brad Schoenleben, Vanessa Brady, and Vanessa Nguyen), who spearheaded the most successful year in Chapman Moot Court history.
