Julio Alvarez Rubio is Associate Professor of Commercial Law, Academic Head of the Euro-American Chair for the Legal Protection of Consumers, and Director of Campus Organization and Communication at the University of Cantabria School of Law in Cantabria, Spain. At the University of Cantabria he served as Associate Dean from 2001-2004 and coordinator of International Relations in the School of Law, and previously taught as an Assistant Professor of Consumer Law in the School of Economics.

Dr. Alvarez has been the President of Arbitration Consumption Court since 2001 and has practiced law since 1992. He specializes in consumer law, misleading advertising, competition law, and the history of Spanish commercial law, and he is the author of two monographs on safe deposit box contract law (Westlaw, 2007) and trade law in Spain's ancient regime (Spanish Bar Association, 1999). He has also published articles in Spanish and international law reviews on misleading and offensive advertising in the European Union, consumer protection and package travel contracts, and consumer arbitration courts in Spain.

Dr. Alvarez has taught at many universities around the world, including at the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM), the University of Guadalajara, the University of Chile, the University of Miskolc in Hungary, the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, the University of San Marcos in Peru, the University of Buenos Aires, the National Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the National University of Distance Education in Spain, and the International University Menendez Pelayo in Spain. He has been visiting scholar at Business University in Wien and at the Legal Institute of Bologna University, and has lectured at the European School of Consumption, Spanish Chamber of Commerce, and t he Spanish National Institute of Consumption, Cantabria Bar Association.

Dr. Alvarez received his Bachelor in Law at Oviedo University in 1991 and his Ph.D., with highest distinction, at the University of Cantabria in 2006. He is an accomplished advocate, and was captain of the University of Cantabria Debate Team which won the Spanish national championship in 2003 and the Latin American championship in 2004. Dr. Alvarez has practiced law since 1992.
