Email: vanzante@chapman.edu Professor van Zante earned his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Colorado College and his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Chicago Law School, where he served as a Comment Editor on the Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. After graduation he practiced law in Boulder, Colorado, for over twenty years, concentrating in tax law. His practice included personal and business income taxation, retirement plans and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), gift and estate tax, and estate planning and administration. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and served as the Chair of the Colorado Bar Association Section of Taxation and as Chair of that organization’s Internal Revenue Service Liaison Committee. During his practice years, he worked for several months with a law firm in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, assisting the firm with its U.S.-related transactions and gaining familiarity with German business, tax, and estate matters. He also took a leave from practice to teach at the University of Iowa College of Law. Professor van Zante joined the faculty of Widener University School of Law, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1993. He has also served as a visiting professor at Mercer University School of Law, Macon, Georgia, and Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington. His courses include Federal Income Tax; Corporate Tax; ERISA and Employee Benefits Law; Partnership Tax; Estate and Gift Tax; Business Planning; and Wills and Trusts. His recent publications analyze the effects of federal retirement plan law on employees’ retirement benefits and have appeared in the Kentucky Law Journal and the Notre Dame Law Review.
