Professor Slocum came to the faculty in 2000 after teaching at Washington University School of Law for eleven years, and directing that school’s Legal Research & Writing Program. She has responsibility for directing the Legal Research and Writing program at Chapman, and has written two textbooks in the legal writing field. The materials that culminated in her first textbook, an “electronic” textbook, received the highest award from the publisher in a national competition for legal writing faculty. Her second textbook, Legal Reasoning, Writing, & Persuasive Argument, has been adopted by numerous schools, including Washington University School of Law, University of Maryland, University of Pittsburgh, University of San Diego, University of Denver, and Catholic University, among others. She has also authored an article on legal education, presented numerous programs at national gatherings of legal writing professionals and conducted workshops in law firms and governmental agencies. Professor Slocum also developed and has taught numerous workshops on legal research and writing on a nationwide basis for BarBri/Nile. Before entering academia, she clerked for Judge James Meredith of the United States District Court and then practiced law for six years, working primarily on litigation matters involving labor, employment law and employee benefits. Professor Slocum received her B.A., from Northwestern University and her Juris Doctor, Order of the Coif, from Washington University, where she was also Senior Editor of the Washington University Law Quarterly. Professor Slocum is a member of the Advisory Board to LexisNexis Publishing Company, a select group of nationally-recognized legal scholars who have published successful casebooks and textbooks. In addition to advising the publishing company on matters pertaining to legal education in general, the Advisory Board members serve a peer review function for evaluating potential new casebooks.
