The Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law Entertainment and Sports Law Society hosts an annual symposium focusing on the field of sports and entertainment law. The symposium covers substantive areas of law such as intellectual property, contract law, labor law, anti-trust law, and corporate finance. The Entertainment and Sports Law Society endeavors to educate its members on the relevant legal issues that accompany this rigorous practice area. By organizing symposia, the society seeks to work with individuals and organizations within the profession and provide information and assistance concerning potential employment opportunities.

Panel One: Beyond the Game: The Rise of Sport-Centric Media
Sports viewership was once limited to live broadcasts of games and events. Today, there are seemingly limitless ways for fans to consume content related to their favorite athlete or sport. From athlete-owned and operated podcasts to streaming league and team series, this panel explores what is driving the proliferation of sport-centric media. Panelists will explore trends, legal issues and opportunities in this dynamic space–from athlete-owned media companies to the role of agencies, leagues and sponsors in identifying and producing content, to the negotiation of landmark broadcasting rights and agreements, panelists will delve into matters including project financing, intellectual property rights, dealmaking and getting the “green light” on projects.

Panel Two: The New Data Frontier: Opportunities Around and Protecting Athlete Biometric Data
The age of big data is proliferating in the sports industry. Increasingly, teams and leagues are utilizing technology to gather athletes’ biometric data for performance and commercialization purposes. This panel will explore the methods of athletic biometric data collection and use. Panelists will consider the legal issues surrounding the increasingly expanded collection of athlete biometric data collection, particularly as it relates to athletes’ rights to privacy and publicity. Ideas for standards of best practice and how to address ethical concerns regarding athlete biometric data collection will be presented.
