Advising Partnerships

- Making the Most of Advising -

line_separator

Advising at Chapman University is a network of support that addresses student needs in many areas -- academic concerns, mentoring, transcript management, career guidance, job placement, internships, social experiences, service opportunities, and emotional and psychological support.

Partnerships are at the heart of the Chapman advising experience, and a successful advising relationship requires both students and advisors to uphold their responsibilities.

Advising Partnership Roles & Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain an advising relationship based on mutual respect.
  • Meet regularly with your advisor.
  • Prepare for your advising meetings: Think about what you want to discuss, and bring a list of issues and questions. For each term, bring a list of the classes you plan to take (check for prerequisites).
Come with an open mind. Bring your academic records, including program evaluation/degree audit (and transcripts if you are a transfer student).
  • Arrive on time and make sure you keep your appointments. Your professors have many demands on their time, and they lose the ability to conduct their work and meet their deadlines when students keep them waiting.
  • Be familiar with your graduation requirements
  • Read the Chapman University catalog and understand campus policies and expectations; read and meet published deadlines.
  • Explore academic and career options you're your advisor and through the Career Development Center.
  • Establish a relationship with a mentor who can help you set and meet long-term educational and career goals.
  • Seek support for your success through the many offices established to aid student growth and achievement.
