What Alumni Say About the Honors Program

Laurie Chamberlain Class of 2004 Diamond Bar, CA
Joining the Honors Program at Chapman was one of the defining moments of my college career. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would lead me down such an extraordinary path, one full of the richest of ideas.
Throughout my time at Chapman I received constant encouragement and support from truly incredible professors. Prof. Barney McGrane's faith in me opened a world of possibilities and allowed me to redefine my beliefs concerning the world around me. I am so grateful for the opportunity he gave me to spread my wings and fly. It goes without saying that I will remember our time together always. |

Ashley Carlson Class of 2003 Albuquerque, NM
The Honors Program at Chapman became like a second family to me, a sentiment that I'm sure is shared by other students. At times, Honors was a comedy club; at other times, a support group. And always, it was one of the most valuable parts of my Chapman education.
I made great friends and had many excellent opportunities in the Honors Program, not to mention all that I learned about myself and the world. And now that I'm out in the world? The sky is the limit. |

Amanda Peterson Class of 2003 Littleton, CO
The experiences I had in and out of class through the Honors program added invaluable depth and richness to my life at Chapman (and beyond). The friendships I made through Honors have endured, as have my memories of thought-provoking discussions, soul searching assignments, plenty of “ah-ha” moments, lots of laughter and unforgettable travel and conference experiences.
Honors was about friendship, community, thought and humor. It was about self-determination and self-discovery. Honors challenged me in ways most of my other academic experiences didn’t—and rewarded me with knowledge that simply cannot be evaluated or quantified in a grade-point system. |

Claudia Navarro Class of 2000 Austin, TX
The Honors Program was a great experience and I am glad I was part of the group. Now, when I go on a retreat or to a conference, I always compare them to the Honors retreats I went on while at Chapman.
The Honors Program really helped me appreciate how different people can really be, while still having the same interests. It was wonderful to sit with an Honors group of students taking an Honors class and hearing the different ideas and the different experiences of others. |

Vincent Bui Class of 1998 Spring, TX
The Honors Program was one of the most enjoyable experiences that I had during my stay at Chapman. I got to meet a lot of great people and enjoy the company of a diverse group of intelligent people whom I am still good friends with today.
I like to think the experience I had in the Honors Program made me learn a lot more about who I am, and shaped me into the person I am today.
Now that I am out of school, whenever I think of the Honors Program, I think of the great friends I made there and the many different learning experiences that I had each time I talked to any of the people in the program.
The key part of the Honors Program that helped me a lot was the program’s strong emphasis in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It, surprisingly, complemented my major and allowed me to become a better-rounded individual. Looking back at this experience, I just have to say the Honors Program experience greatly helped shape the way I think and approach the problems I have faced in life. |

Jennifer (Beattie) Baiocchi Class of 1997 Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
While at Chapman, the Honors Program exposed me to new ideas and new people. It opened by mind to try new things and attempt new experiences. While in one class, I met my future husband (Chris Baiocchi, Class of '97). In another, I met a woman who inspired me to study abroad—which turned out to be the best thing I have ever done. It challenged me to re-evaluate my own ideas and beliefs and also helped me to discover who I am and where I fit in. I still use the knowledge that I gained in the Honors Program almost every day of my life.
