A special news item sure to tickle Honors alumni:   Professor Pat See, Director of the University Honors Program, knows how to educate and inspire her students. Just ask Chris ’02 and Melissa (Powell) Eggleton ’01.
“We want to credit Professor See for the success of our relationship,” says Melissa. “We like to say that we learned everything we needed to know about marriage from her.”
Both Chris and Melissa enrolled in Prof. See's Sociology 204 class, Marriage and the Family.  Little did they realize how fateful it was to meet in this particular class.
Chris and Melissa  quickly became friends during class that semester. Their acquaintances set them up on a date and they have been inseparable since.  They were married in 2004, have one son and live in Park City, Utah.  (Alumni magazine 2006)

Rene Bennett
Class of 2005
New Orleans
rene.bennett@gmail.com

Survived and going back to hurricanes and law books:   Surviving her speech as the Cheverton Award winner at Chapman's graduation ceremony in May 2005, Rene packed her bags and headed to China for a summer of interesting culture experiences before tackling law school at Tulane University in New Orleans. After her first wonderful week of classes, Hurricane Katrina hit the city, causing chaos, destruction and a postponed first semester. Law school will resume in January 2006. For now, Rene is working at a law office in Newport Beach and she is eager for her return to the Big Easy. Wish her luck as law school goes into overdrive--classes will be held six days a week to make up for the lost semester (gulp). As a side note -- Rene officially hates hurricanes. (11/05)

Tyler Malotte
Class of 2005
Los Angeles, CA
tylermalotte@yahoo.com

Making inroads: Tyler;s suggested headline for this brief:  Scary to Think: Tyler Malotte--Teacher.  But, we think he probably is a great teacher, so we went with our own headline.  Tyler reports that he joined Teach for America after graduation, to devote two years to teaching at an underserved school.  He works with Special Education students, who have learning disabilities or behavior issues. His first year he was teaching 7th grade match, science and history at Mt. Vernon Middle School in Crenshaw. The school has now been renamed, he reports, to the Jonnie L. Cochran Jr. Middle School.  (We'll leave out his comments on that move.) This year he is teaching 7th and 8th grade science and 7th grade math -- all special education classes.  He's also finishing his master's in special education.  If anyone is considering a career in education, he invites you to shoot him an email and/or come to visit his school to check it out.  (10/06)

Bethany Crouch
Class of 2004
Richland,
Washington
bethanyc@keprtv.com

On the air: For those of you I haven't been able to get in touch with lately, I have moved to Washington state to accept the morning anchor/producer position with the CBS affiliate in Pasco, WA. I am loving every minute and having to pinch myself when I lapse into dream mode. My hours are a little quirky... from 11:30 p.m .to 7:30 a.m., so I am totally nocturnal. The picture was taken the first day on air, March 7. The guy on the left is Rob Roxburgh, my co-anchor, the one on the right is Mike McCabe, our whacky weatherman. We have a good time, if you can't tell. Also, I finally for the first time in my life have my own apartment, which I love. So consider yourself officially invited. (07/05).

A Mighty Update:  After a short lived stint in the world of coffee and a chain of unfathomable good luck, I've just become the new Creative Assistant for Studio Hamburg International Production.  I make a lot of phone calls, send a lot of faxes, read a lot of scripts, and am in contact with a lot of supposedly important people.  Now they just need to start focusing on what I've written.

Class of 2003

Breann Handley
Class of 2003
Hawaii

Running for a cause: Breann and her boyrfriend, Matt Moebius, recently completed the 26.2-mile Kona Marathon in Hawaii, raising $7,980 for the American Stroke Association, a new division of the American Heart Association. In January, 2004, they joined the Orange County Train to End Stroke team. As we know, Breann is not a runner. But she trained hard and met her goal of finishing the race and raising funds for stroke awareness. Breann and Matt ran in memory of their great-grandmothers, Breann's grandmother, and other relatives who have been affected by stroke. For information about strokes and warning signs, visit the American Heart Association.

Laurie Chamberlain
Class of 2003
Diamond Bar, CA

Making a difference: After graduation, Laurie was offered (and accepted) her dream job.  She runs the Riverside County office of Big Brothers Big Sisters.  As an Enrollment and Matching Specialist, she is responsible for matching adult mentors with kids who desperately need them.  Laurie says she loves the job so much she can't believe she's getting paid to do it.  Laurie starts each day knowing that by that evening she will have made a difference in her community.  She can't think of anything she would rather be involved in then improving her community, one person at a time.

Ashley Carlson
Class of 2003
Albuquerque, NM
genefyre@aol.com

Teaching Honors: Ashley has finished her Master’s at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and is now officially a Ph.D student. She’s co-teaching an upper-division English class that is cross-listed with Honors (way to go!) — the class is built around inviting local authors to speak about their books. She also is looking forward to teaching another English class, which she can design herself. She’s decided on calling it the "Rhetoric of Pop Culture." Ashley hopes to finish her course work by May 2007 and finish her dissertation by May 2008. In other news, she decided to try out for a show at the local community theater. The audition was the worst she has ever done, she said, but it has been six years, afterall, since the last time she auditioned for a show. Anyway, she got a role in the chorus of "The Man of La Mancha."  It opens in September, for anyone traveling to Albuquerque. (7/05)

Amanda Peterson
Class of 2003
Littleton, CO

After leaving Chapman, Amanda worked for the Girl Scouts in Denver, doing outreach programs in schools across the city. (It was, well, another learning experience.)  She also taught a program called Earth Force for sixth graders. Recently, she had a phenomenal vacation in Paris with two other Honors students. One of them, Ashley (’03), is an incredible travel itinerary creator.  Despite the metro strike (or “social movement”), they were able to see an astonishing number of things in a short time, while really enjoying themselves and not getting too exhausted.  Amanda is now totally enamored with the French way of life, and she can’t wait to go back again. Amanda is back in school now in Colorado, to study natural resources interpretation and hopefully move into some sort of environmental education-related position.
