Frequently Asked Questions
These pertain to prospective Graduate students for the School of Education programs.
- What is the deadline to apply for admission? When should I turn in my graduate application?
Chapman University has a rolling admissions policy. A student can apply at anytime up to a month before the start of each semester, except for the School Psychology and School Counseling Programs. The deadline for those programs is March 1 of each year.
- May I start the credential program in the spring or summer?
Yes, you can start any term, except for the School Counseling and School Psychology Programs. Students admitted into these programs start in the fall.
- Can I start the School Counseling or School Psychology program in the spring?
No, new students are only accepted for the fall semester.
- When should I submit my graduate application for the School Counseling or School Psychology programs?
The deadline is March 1. It is advisable to start applying in early January.
- What are the admissions requirements?
The GPA requirement is a 2.75 for Credential programs and 3.0 for Master's programs. If a student does not meet the GPA requirement, a graduate exam must be taken. Chapman accepts the GRE, CSET, SSAT/PRAXIS or MAT exams (see current graduate catalog for more details). Passing CBEST scores and registration confirmation of appropriate subject matter exam is also required.
- What do I need to apply?
You will need a graduate application, $40 application fee, three letters of recommendation, two of which must be on our forms. Recommendations can come from personal, academic, or professional sources. Only one recommendation can be a personal reference. Official transcripts, and a statement of intent are also required (application provides details on content). Please contact Graduate Admissions (1-888-CUAPPLY) for an application packet. Passing CBEST scores and registration confirmation of appropriate subject matter exam are also required.
- What is the cost?
Please visit the Student Business Services website for tuition information.
- When are your classes offered?
Presently most classes are offered at 4 pm and 7 pm Monday thru Thursday, however a select number are offered on-line or on Saturdays.
- How can I get general information about your programs?
Students are encouraged to access Chapman University’s School of Education website. Also feel free to contact Graduate Admissions (1-888-CUAPPLY) to request an information/application packet to be sent out to you. Prospective students are also encouraged to attend one of our monthly information sessions. Contact the Office of Admission at 714-997-6711 for more details or to RSVP for an information session.
- Who can I speak with about your programs or to get information on admissions requirements?
Admission questions may be directed to the Office of Admission by calling (714) 997-6711 or emailing admit@chapman.edu. General questions about our program can be directed to the School of Education front office at 714-997-6781.
- How long do your programs take?
The credential program can be completed in three semesters - Fall, Spring, and Summer. A full load of 12 units is required to finish at this pace. Other programs, such as our Master's degrees are two to three years, depending on course load and program. If you would like to attend at a different pace, please be aware that students have seven calendar years to complete their required course of study.
- How much of my previous coursework will transfer?
Transferability of course work is subject to a number of criteria. It must be a course from an accredited university and it must meet the Seven-Year Rule (seven years starts the year you take the class and ends at the completion of your program). Courses taken also must contain the same content as Chapman’s courses and you must have received a B or better. - Do you offer any online programs/courses?
The School of Education does not offer online programs, however there are a few courses offered on-line i.e., EDUC 531-Health Education for Teachers and EDUC 551-Educational Applications of Computers.
- Do you have internship programs?
Yes, the requirements are as follows:
- A paid position within a district that has a contract agreement with Chapman University. Check with the School of Education for a list of current districts.
- Satisfy subject matter competency (MSAT, CSET, or SSAT/PRAXIS)
- Satisfy US Constitution requirement (Political Science Class)
- Pass CBEST
- Obtain a Certificate of Clearance from CCTC.
- I just turned in my graduate application materials, what happens next?
Once Graduate Admissions receives all of the required admission materials, they will process the information, including a GPA calculation. The file will then be sent over to the School of Education and you will be notified for an intake interview. Once that last step is completed and you meet all of the requirements, you will be admitted to the program.
