Master of Science in Health Communication

Explore the role of communication in society
Chapman University’s Master of Science in Health Communication examines the critical role of interpersonal and mediated communication in health and strategic communication environments, including government, organizational life, health care, media systems and education.

Through extensive research and theory, candidates develop the knowledge and communication skills to pursue careers as teachers, researchers and policy experts in academia, government, non-profit or private organizations. Courses are designed to educate you in human communication theory and methodology and to evaluate important communication topics such as delivering upsetting news, the accuracy of the media, the digital divide, public advocacy, intercultural sensitivity, health literacy and the quality of interpersonal relationships.

Faculty Scholarship
Candidates have access to a knowledgeable and engaging faculty with expertise in health and risk communication. Our faculty members pursue research in education and promotion in consumer-provider relationships, communication organizations, policy, campaigns, and interventions, among others.

Our faculty is involved with the National Communication Association, the International Communication Association, the National Institutes of Health - including the Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch of the National Cancer Institute, and the National Library of Medicine. As active researchers, our distinguished faculty have published numerous books and dozens of scholarly articles concerning the applications of communication in society and serve as editors of leading research journals.



Course of Study
Candidates for the M.S. in Health Communication must successfully complete 30 credits of graduate course work.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences–Health Communication Track may complete up to 9 credits of this graduate coursework during their senior year.

Core Courses (15 credits):

HC 582  Health Communication Campaigns 3
HC 595  Research Methodology 3
HC 598  Community-Based Health Interventions Capstone Research 3

Specialized Content Courses (12 credits):
HC 596  Special Topics in Research Methodology 6
HC 597  Special Topics in Health and Risk Communication 6
With approval of the graduate director, students may take up to
6 credits of specialized content in courses outside the department.

Practicum (3 credits from the following):

HC 585  Training and Consulting in Healthcare 3
HC 599  Independent Study in Health and Risk Communication 3

Total Credits 30

Courses are generally offered one night per week, Monday through Thursday,
from 4:00-6:50 p.m. or 7:00-9:50 p.m.



Admission Procedures
To be considered for admission, applicants must submit the following:

  • Application to the Chapman University Master of Science in Health Communication program;
  • Official transcripts from all regionally accredited institutions attended;
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores taken within the last five years;
  • Three letters of recommendation, including one from an academic source, which describe your professional and academic abilities;
  • A 500-word essay addressing the area of communication in which you are interested.

About the Program Director
Lisa Sparks, Ph.D.
Sparks_LDr. Lisa Sparks received her Ph.D. in communication from the University of Oklahoma in 1998. In addition to her role as Director of Graduate Studies for the M.S. in Health Communication, Dr. Sparks is Professor and Presidential Research Fellow of Health and Risk Communication. Prior to joining Chapman in 2006, Dr. Sparks occupied positions at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia where she served as Director of Graduate Programs and General Education Courses, affiliated faculty with the National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases and the Center for Social Science Research, and the University of Texas at San Antonio, positions she held until she joined Chapman University.

A highly regarded teacher-scholar whose published work spans more than 100 research articles and scholarly book chapters, Dr. Sparks is the author and editor of more than 10 books in the areas of communication, health, and aging with a distinct focus on cancer communication science. Her recent books include Health Communication in the 21st Century (Blackwell, 2008 with Kevin B. Wright and Dan O'Hair), Handbook of Communication and Cancer Care (Hampton Press, 2007 with Dan O'Hair and Gary Kreps), Cancer, Communication and Aging (Hampton Press, 2008 with Dan O'Hair and Gary Kreps), Talking Cancer (Aresta, 2008 with Melinda M. Villagran), and Patient-Provider Interaction (Polity Press, 2009 with Melinda M. Villagran).

Dr. Sparks has also served as editor of Communication Research Reports and currently serves on several editorial boards, including Journal of Applied Communication Research, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and Communication Quarterly.
