Connecting to Chapman University Network Getting Started You will need a Category 5 or Category 6 Ethernet cable of the appropriate length. It must NOT be a cross-over cable. Locate the Ethernet port on the laptop and connect one end of the Ethernet cable into the port. Connect the other end to the wall port designated as the Ethernet port. On the Vista machine, right-click on the Network system icon (located before the speaker icon).
Select “Network and Sharing Center” from the menu.
If there are no problems with the connections and other factors, Network and Sharing Center will try to identify and connect to the network automatically.
Congratulations, you are now connected to Chapman’s network. Troubleshooting Connection Errors: If you are unable to connect, your TCP/IP settings might be wrong. Click on “View Status” from the “Network and Sharing Center” to get the Local Area Connection Status:
Click on the “Properties” button to change the network settings. Click “Continue” when the User Account Control pops up.
Make sure that “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP)” is checked. Click on it one time to select it and then click on the “Properties” button. Make sure there are dots on the “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”. Click on “OK”, then click on “Close”, and “Close” again to exit back to the Network and Sharing Center.
