Backing Up to a CD Using XP

1. Make sure that you have a CD-R or CD-RW Drive installed in your computer.

Insert a blank writable CD into the drive.

2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.

Depending on how your computer is configured, the My Computer icon is either located on the desktop OR you may click on the Start button then select the My Computer icon from there.

3. Double-click on the CD-R or CD-RW Drive.
The CD Drive window will open.
You may position this window in the corner of your desktop so that it is out of the way. Please leave this window open as you go through the following steps.

4. From here, the files and/or folders that you wish to backup may be "added" to the CD Drive window.

For instance, if you have files located in the My Documents folder that you would like to back up, double-click on the My Documents folder to open it.

Navigate to the location of the file.

5. Right-click on the file.

Select "Send to" then select your CD-R or CD-RW Drive.

6. Notice that a transparent representation of the file has been added to the CD Drive window under "Files Ready to Be Written to the CD" with an arrow pointing downwards.

Please be aware that this DOES NOT affect the original file. It has only been added to a "queue" to be written to CD when you choose to do so. The files and folders that you may see in the CD Drive window are a representation of this "queue."

Also, please be aware that if you need to back up a folder, all of its contents will be added to the queue to be recorded as well.

7. You may continue adding files and folders until you are done or until the capacity of the CD has been reached.

Most CDs have a maximum capacity of 650 MB or 700MB. Be sure NOT to exceed the limit of the CD during each backup session.

8. When you are ready to burn a CD, click on the File menu in the CD Drive window.

Select "Write these files to CD."

9. The CD Writing Wizard will open

If desired, you may change the CD name.

10. Click on the Next button to begin recording your CD.

It may take a few minutes to record the CD, depending on how much data needs to be burned.

11. Once your computer is done writing to the CD, you may choose to burn another copy of the data or you may click on the Finish button to exit.
You may also choose to delete the "Files Ready to Be Written to CD" from the CD Drive window to clear the "queue." Please be sure you are deleting files from the CD Drive window, NOT from the original file location. Again, deleting the files in the CD Drive window WILL NOT effect the original files.
