Ethernet conection for Macintosh for Morlan and BeckmanEthernet has been installed in both North and South Morlan and in Beckman Hall. In order to use this high-speed network access, your computer needs to be configured properly. These instructions detail how to connect any Macintosh running system 7.6 or greater to the network. If at any time you have questions regarding these steps, call the Network Hotline at 744-7939 or x7939. Getting Started All computers will need a Catigory 5 Ethernet Cable with RJ-45 plugs to go from the wall to the computer. An RJ-45 plug looks like a phone plug but wider. They come in varying lengths and cost about $10 to start. Make sure you have plenty of cable to reach from the plug in the wall to your computer. Most Macs have some form of network adapter in them already. The network adapter is the plug next to the <. . .> icon. The new Power PCs have an RJ-45 socket in the back. Just plug in a cable from your computer to the wall, set up your system, and you're good to go. Older Macs have a network adapter but it may not be Ethernet. If this does not look like a wider telephone plug, you need a transceiver. A transceiver plugs into the network port and has a RJ-45 Ethernet socket on the other end. Generic brands run about $30 while the official Apple Transceiver will cost roughly $65. Both will do the job for you. Configuring TCP/IP
For this example, the server has already provided the numbers. Your window will have "<will be supplied by server>" or something similar instead. The Search domain (or domain name) is "chapman.edu". Make sure your cable is plugged in properly, close the window, hit "ok if it asks you to save changes", and open up any Internet program (Netscape, Eudora, etc.) and surf or email to your heart's content.
