Open Transport/PPP Instructions

Getting Started

First make sure that either Open Transport/PPP is installed or you are running MacOS 8.5 or greater. In System 7.6 and 8.0, the default is to only install Open Transport. You will have to mark the PPP checkbox while installing the System software or use the separate Open Transport/PPP installer. Once you have done this, you can proceed to the configuration.

Configuring TCP/IP

Open the TCP/IP control panel. By default it is located in the Apple menu under Control Panels.

Configure the TCP/IP control panel as shown. You will have to set the "Connect via" popup menu to PPP. The Name server address is 192.77.116.3 and the Search domain (or domain name) is chapman.edu. Once you are done, close the window and proceed to the Configuring PPP section.

ConfiguringPPP  (or Remote Access)

Open the PPP (or Remote Access) control panel. Assuming that you installed Open Transport/PPP from the installer or are running MacOS 8.5 or greater, it will be located under Control Panels in the Apple menu.

Configure the PPP control panel as shown. Make sure that when entering your email account, you do NOT include the @chapman.edu suffix. If you choose to check the save password option, be sure that you don't forget what your password is. If you do not check save password, you will have to type in your password every time you want to connect. The  dialup extension for on-campus users is x6511.  If you are off campus, the phone number for 14.4 modems is (714) 997-6511, and the number for 28.8 and greater modems is (714) 244-5000. The control panel may ask you to configure your modem before proceeding. Go the the next section, Modem Configuration.

Modem Configuration

Open the Modem control panel (if it is not already open).

Configure the Modem control panel similarly to what is shown here. You will have to choose your modem from the popup menu. If your modem type is not listed in the popup menu, try using either the Hayes or US Robotics settings.

Getting Connected

After you are finished with the configuration, you will be ready to connect. Open the PPP control panel (if not already open) and click connect. You should hear the modem dial the phone and connect with our modem bank. Once you are connected, you can use Internet applications such as Netscape and Eudora.
