System Restore
System Restore can be used to undo harmful changes to your computer, and restore settings and performance. It will return your computer to an earlier time, and you will not lose any recently saved work, documents or 3rd party program settings. Any changes that System Restore makes to your computer are completely reversible. It is recommeded to always have your System Restore turned on. The first two steps are how to check if System Restore is turned on.
If it has just been turned on, System Restore will not be useful at all. If you would like to create a Restore Point first before making any major hardware or software changes either go to Creating a System Restore Point in the Documentation page, or go click on this link, Creating a System Restore Point.
To access System Restore select Start --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore. |
Before going any further you need to check to see if System Restore is turned on. |
If you are using a factory or new install of Windows XP this should be automatically enabled.
If it is turned off, un-check the box right next to, "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Now this will not enable you to do an immediate restore, but it will allow you to restore in the future if you need to. |
| If the System Restore has already been turned on, then select Restore my computer to an earlier time, then hit next. |
The next screen will be a calendar with dates of when the system had created a restore point automatically.
Click on the preferred date, if you had recently installed a program it will show up under, 2. On this list, click a restore point.
For example the date chosen here has two programs installed, Extension Manger and Dreamweaver MX.
After picking the chosen date, click on Next. |
The next screen will confirm your restore point choice, which will be shown in red.
To restore your computer to the previously selected date click on Next. |
After clicking Next, your computer will restore to the selected time. It will restart the computer, no data will be lost, and everything should be running properly.
If the restore did not work, then you can Undo the restore. |
