Desktop vs. Laptop: A common question students ask prior to purchasing a new computer is whether it should be a laptop or a desktop. Students must carefully consider their computing needs in deciding between these options.
Each type of system has its advantages and disadvantages; below are offered to help you think about which you prefer:
LAPTOP Advantages
Disadvantages

DESKTOP Advantages
-

more audio and video options
Disadvantages

not portable
-
takes lots of space
Portability is the reason why laptop computer sales have been growing faster than desktop computer sales. It is difficult to move a desktop to another location. Laptop computers can be taken to class, the library, or home for the weekend. Students with laptop computers can also take advantage of Chapman’s wireless network that provides connectivity from all classrooms and most public areas on the Orange Campus including the Library and the dining areas. However, with portability comes a greater risk of theft.
If you plan to do most of your work in your room, it is most cost-effective to buy a desktop computer. Upgrading or replacing parts is much easier on a desktop than a laptop. Students who plan to compose music, design graphics, or perform other demanding tasks may decide a more powerful desktop

To use the wireless network, you will need to have a wireless card. Our wireless network supports both 802.11b and 802.11g.
Printer: There are two types of printers: Inkjet or Laser
Inkjet printers do a good job printing text and color. They are a good printing solution for those looking to minimize the up-front cost and/or for those who will need to print occasionally in color. It is important to note that the inkjet cartridges will need to be replaced frequently, usually after printing just a few hundred pages.
Laser printers be it either black and white or color, the laser printer is faster, more robust and more capable of producing sharper text, and images. The up-front cost can be quite a bit higher than that of inkjets, but it more than pays for itself in the long run.
