October 2008
Ruben Martinez, one of Orange County's most respected cultural leaders, has been named Chapman University's newest Presidential Fellow. His work will focus on bringing first-generation immigrant students into Chapman's science and math programs. Martinez will officially begin his work at Chapman in January 2009.

October 20: “Human Rights and the Struggle for Peace” Author, activist and Noble Peace Prize recipient Rigoberta Menchú was born to a poor Indian peasant family and raised in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture. Over the years, Menchú has become widely known as a leading advocate of Indian rights and ethno-culture reconciliation, not only in Guatemala but in the Western Hemisphere. October 17: Film Screening. Join the director, Cyrus Nowrasteh, for a special screening of his latest film, The Stoning of Soraya M. Stranded in a remote Iranian village, a French journalist is approached by Zahra, a woman who has a harrowing tale to tell about her niece, Soraya, and the bloody circumstances of her death the day before. A shocking and true drama, it exposes the dark power of mob rule, uncivil law and an utter lack of human rights for women. Q&A will follow the screening. Rated R. Seating is limited. October 14: Oxfam Hunger Banquet. In every nation on earth, people go to sleep hungry even though our planet produces enough food to feed every woman, man, and child. Oxfam''s Hunger Banquet is an interactive dinner that demonstrates the unequal distribution of food around the world. June 12: Dr. Marilyn Harran, Chapman University Professor of religion and history, Stern Chair in Holocaust Education, and director of Rodger's Center for Holocaust Education, received the prestigious Spirit of Anne Frank Award in a ceremony in New York City.

May 28 - June 11: Two Chapman faculty take five students to Cambodia to create a documentary film that will build awareness and visibility for two non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This is part of a new documentary film program at Dodge College.

April 29: An Evening of Holocaust Remembrance. Solemn commemoration in music and words, remembering the victims of the Holocaust, including a candle-lighting ceremony representing the Chapman community’s commitment to remembrance and to witness. Memorial Hall. Admission: free. 7 p.m.

March 7: Awards Ceremony: The Ninth Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest. Hundreds of Southern California middle and high school students and their teachers and parents gather at the culmination of the annual student writing and art contest presented by Chapman’s Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education in partnership with The “1939” Club. Following the awards presentation, participants have the opportunity to meet and converse with Holocaust survivors. Memorial Hall. Admission: free (public seating extremely limited). 11 a.m.

February 19: "An Evening in Ethiopia," song and dance. A fund-raiser for the non-profit charity Hands Across the Planet for Poor Youth (H.A.P.P.Y.) founded by Chapman public safety officer, Michael Belay. $20 or free to faculty, staff, and students with ID. Memorial Hall, 8pm.
February 12: Screening of the documentary Swimming in Auschwitz, followed by conversation with writer/director/producer Jon Kean and Auschwitz survivor Renée Firestone. Memorial Hall. Admission: free. 7 p.m.
